Each time you go through the musical scale, you go through one octave. In the next octave up, the notes will be twice the frequency of the previous octave, but still the same notes. For example, the A string on a guitar is tuned to 440 hertz (cycles per second). If you go through the scale and come back to the next highest A note, it will be at 880 hertz.
An 8 octave range means that a person has the ability to sing notes that have 8 octaves between the lowest note they can sing to the highest.

That you're Mariah Carey! LOL
It's typically considered a myth for a performer to have a full 8 octave range. I think alot of people consider your lowest note to your highest note - without verification that you can sucessfully sing in between. That scream Mariah Carey does in the Whistle Register is considered part of her range. an octive is a series of notes.

It means your a great singer, one who can do this that I know of is Mariah Carey, she can sing any song no matter how high it is, they can go from the lowest to the highest octave. How I envy that voice.
