I love these questions. I have researched the Dairy Council's methods for many years now. Here is the low down.

In the mid 19th century - dairy farmers created a union the Dairy Council - which consisted of many state unions - which still exist today (important).

They were unionized prior to the development of the Agricultural department (created under Lincoln). So they were able to be very persuasive in getting their people on the board of this federal body, which would later be the number one voice on healthy diets.

Since they were able to control the constitution(make-up) of the original Dept. of Agriculture, they have been able to place "dairy" people in it since.

Currently - they use small independent research firms to perform their research, Often these firms are hard up for cash. They specify what they are looking for in the results, and if the results do not provide the desired results, the firm will not get paid. So, if the research is showing something different, researchers may need to change the results in order to get the money their firm needs. (I'm not saying it happens but...)

Also they say things in advertising that may not be true, notice they advertise through the state unions, not the national union. This prevents a lawsuit that could take down the whole union, a plaintiff could only go after one of the smaller unions.

Because they are subsidized - think about this - they get money from the government for keeping production down. They often throw away millions of gallons to keep the price up. But, they also receive tax dollars to advertize, basically.

Their ties to the government have enabled their access to our school systems. Where coloring books with happy smiling cows tell our children that we need to drink milk. Just look at the responses above.

PEOPLE WE NEED TO LEARN TO QUESTION OUR BELIEFS, DON'T TAKE EVERYTHING THEY FEED YOU.

They have created a cultural belief that we need milk, and when they develop proof to create other benefits that belief is strengthened.

The food pyramid is presented to us by the department of agriculture, not the department of health and human services. It is simply a marketing tool. think about it.

Osteoporosis occurs at higher rates in the countries that drink milk. Asia has few problems with that disease, and they drink little milk.

New research has shown that exercise is the answer to building strong bones, dairy has little to do with it. Calcium is more readily available in vegetable form.

WAKE UP AMERICA. AND, THINK ABOUT IT.

It's because of all those ad campaigns by the U.S. Dairy Council! The dairy farmers have to make a profit, so the government subsidizes them and runs these ad campaigns. Of course, they're very misleading. For example, the ads go on ad nauseam about how milk is such a great source of calcium, but the fact of the matter is that milk has so much protein that it often blocks the absorption of calcium. Not only that, but the ads say that milk is a good source of vitamin D, but the only reason why milk has vitamin D is because it's fortified. Sunlight is actually the best source of vitamin D!

#1 the dairy industry advertises it as healthy to sell products just like any other industry
#2 there are non-fat and low-fat products you can choose
#3 some people don't use their brains and think all dairy is created equal, so ice cream is the same as skim milk- which it's not
#4 there are health benefits like calcium, vit. D and protein but you could also choose soy milk instead

Well for myself I would like to gain weight but a lot of people have trouble digesting dairy products. We don't have the enzymes to break it down. The problem is dairy is in everything! I know, I am allergic.

Hey,I agree with.I don't see how they got away with saying adding three glasses of milk a day will help you lose weight. That's kind of ironic, since cow's milk is meant to turn a 40 pound calf into a 400 pound cow.People always talk about the calcium in milk...but the calcium in milk isn't very usable.

The calcium in milk and dairy products isn't very usable by the body, you have to a ratio of of magnesium equal to the amount of calcium, milk has much more calcium than magnesium. You also have to have a low PH level of you calcium source, milk has a high PH,plants have low PH levels. If you look at some of the countries with the highest dairy intakes...they also have high osteoperosis rates.Osteoperosis is caused by TOO MUCH protein...not too little calcium.Animal protein is acidic and actually causes calcium to be leeched out of the bones, excess protein cannot be stored by your body, you basically just pee it out, along with protein goes calcium, which can be very hard on you kidneys. The best sources of calcium are dark, green leafy vegetables.

You need dairy to ensure that your bones are getting enough calcium. Even if you're not getting taller anymore, your bones still are adding a long of mass until your mid 30's. You need good bone mass, so that you don't get osteoporosis in your old age. Osteoporosis can lead to hip fractures, which is really devastating to older people. A lot of people are unable to walk even a year after breaking your hip.

Anything is fattening if you don't eat it in moderation. Fondue, pizza, or ice cream are pretty bad, but its the high fat content of the the cheese or heavy cream in the ice cream that makes it fattening. If you go for the low fat, no added sugar dairy, then its actually pretty low calorie. They have sugar free, fat free diet yogurt that's around 100 calories. I eat these for snacks, and I feel satisfied. I wouldn't feel satisfied if I ate 100 calories of something else. Fat fee milk, low-fat cheese, and low fat cottage cheese isn't bad either.

That's kind of an ignorant question.

From the time we were in elementary school, they taught us the food groups-and dairy is one of them. Calcium is very important, and dairy products are an excellent way to get calcium.

If you're that concerned about gaining weight off of milk or cheese, there are low-fat options and other substitutes.

Not only is dairy good for you, it is also good for the economy. There are dairy farmers galore out there that make an honest living off of us people that appreciate a cold glass of milk, or a little cheese on our crackers. Do you honestly jeopardize their existence because you're concerned about a pound or two?

Like I said before, this is an ignorant question. A fifth grader could have given you a logical answer.

Most foods contain some type of fat or sugar. If we all avoided every fattening food, we would die. Your diet needs to contain some fat.
Dairy products are healthy for many reasons. They contain calcium, which your bones need to grow. You can take calcium pills, or even have calcium-fortified foods and drinks, but the quality of calcium, and the amount that is absorbable by your body is the highest in dairy products.
A balanced diet containg the right proportions of all of the food groups is the most healthy diet.

Not all dairy is fattening- like skim milk and reduced fat cheese.

Calcium is a really important nutrient, especially for kids and women of child bearing age.

Milk also has tons of other nutrients in it.
