I have been working at Wal-Mart as a cart pusher for 1 1/2 years and it really sucks. It's either too hot or too cold, scheduling does not work for my college classes and it is the worst job in America. We get paid the lowest salary and they don't care about us or my college schedule. There is NOT one damn thing delightful about this job. I was awarded Cart-Pusher of the Year and a $25 bonus added to my check, but I am calling this a "Mercy Gift." I am transferring to a larger college this fall and I don't care if they don't like my new college schedule. What am I to do?

I was 20 seconds away from saying something I would regret to the managers, but then Claude held me back...

I think you should definitely look into working for another company. From what I hear, Wal-Mart is really going downhill. I worked there for five years---while I was working on my undergraduate degree. These days, my mom works there in the jewelry department, and they are constantly giving people screwy hours, giving the good hours to the people who don't do their jobs properly, and other such things. Also, every time someone quits a full time position, they hire someone else to do the same job as a part time worker. Eventually, they'll run themselves into the ground.

Of course, I still shop there, because they have cheap prices and I am a graduate student. heh.

Good luck.

PS. Perhaps you could look into student labor/work study at your college. Those jobs are usually a lot more fun, and they're usually pretty laid back, too. Additionally, you could find one that relates to your major, which will be points for you when you graduate and start job hunting.

Why don't you go out and look for another job? When you ask for employment, be sure to tell the management of your plans for college and be up front about your need for special timing. Working at a grocery store is sometimes better, perhaps on the night shift when they stock the shelves. You are going to another larger college in the fall so I hope you can get another job to fill in before college begins. Are you in need of a full time job? Because you will have to take what you can if you cannot work on scheduled time. Good luck and do not give up college for a job at Wal-Mart.

Use this experience and learn from it. I doubt I would have been motivated to finish college and better my life if I hadn't spent several years in my young life as a dishwasher. That's another job that sucks. I know that I won't be a dishwasher again. I have options.

Now, that's not to say that I think it's beneath me to wash dishes for a living. I would do it again if I had to. It's just to say that I worked to open up my options based on my experience. I prefer not to do that job....but I would if I had to.

What you should do in the short term? Look around for a different job. Let them know that you stuck with a job for a year and half. Let them know that you got recognition and a bonus. There are a lot of places that will now place value on the fact that you stuck with it, did the work and was rewarded. Don't discount the value of what you have done. It's the first step at being a valuable employee for some place that will treat you well.

Wal Marts also differ by who the manager is. Can you interview with the Wal Mart close to you new college and feel them out on their cooperation policy for college students, and don't even apply for cart pusher. Try cashier. Then transfer to that store at that time. Then if you don't like it you still have a job and you can begin looking in your new location.

I am proud of you trying to combine your studies and doing a job to earn for a living. I was in Canada two years ago and , sure, I happened to go shopping to Wal - Mart, customers leave carts all over parking lots and it must be really boring to do this job for a college student, like you. Get some other job. Good luck. You are not at all a loser.

Well, when you have to schedule a job around your college classes, It is unlikely that you are going to get anything to exciting. So, you push carts, that is commendable, it may not be the most exciting job in the world but you are making some money at it , and you will certainly have a clue of what you don't want to work at when College is over. Hang in there, It won't be forever.

LOL this is why they want Walmart unionized. Thta might or might not help but you have the best answer. Keep working and get another job. Go to your school and see a counselor they should be able to refer you to whomever handles students desperately in need of jobs-1 1/2 years of employment in that environment shows dedication and you will be ok for a bit longer while somehting better is put together for you. when you transfer to the new school do the same thing. put together a resume and go for it!

i hope this helps you or gets you on the path to something better

I would switch jobs. You may be doing the same thing for a short time, but I know that some of the best places for young people to work around here are supermarkets. The one right by me has union benefits even for part-time, including medical insurance, a tuition program, and they seem to be very flexible for their employees' educational needs. I know kids that have worked there since age 16 and are 20 or 21 and still there. This one is called Jewel. You may not have them where you live.
Oh, and to the first answerer, don't answer if your only answer is "I Don't Know." That is stupid.

Don't view yourself as a loser. Practically everyone has at one time or another had a job that wasn't so great. I know I've had a few of them.
You sure need to look out for you. The company, any company, will stay true to its own ends...to make money. They don't care how or who gets the job done, as long as it gets done and they get back more than they give.
College is your way to better occupations. But you know that.
Stay true to YOUR goals.
If they do not "like" your new schedule, oh well.
There ARE other jobs, there IS life after WallyWorld.
