The short answer is that they kill worms present in an animal's gut, and they prevent infestation if worms are not already present.

Different dewormers contain different drugs and therefore have different modes of action. Most work by interfering with the parasite's ability to metabolise, which quickly kills them. Some paralyse them. And no, these drugs can't have the same affect on dogs and cats because their anatomy and physiology is in no way similiar to tape/roundworms and cannot therefore be affected in the same way

A dewormer for dogs removes Roundworms ( Toxocara canis , Toxascaris leonina ), Hookworms ( Ancylostoma caninum , Uncinaria stenocephala ) Whipworms ( Trichuris vulpis ) and Tapeworms ( Taenia pisiformis ).

Why Should You Deworm Your Dog?
Almost all dogs are born with roundworms and without proper treatment, worms can seriously affect the health of your dog. Internal parasites can affect your dog's immune system and how food is absorbed through his GI tract. To maximize the health of your dog, it is important to give regular dewormer treatments as part of your dog's health maintenance program through-out the year.
