My family says that it's a distraction from the conversations that we should be having...but I like to sing anyway. :)

Greatly depends on the circumstances.

If its a family and friends dinner at home, people can break into song, usually others join in. Not unusual for Europeans to do this. Some European weddings go on for days and its common for guests not only to sing, but dance (usually at someone's home).

If its a restaurant - I don't recommend it - unless it is European and appropriate for that restaureant. Happy B Day is done in restaurants.

If its just you having an overwhelming desire to blurt out "Life is a Cabaret", or "Like a Virgin", I would hold back and save it for the shower.

By singing you are blocking any type of conversation.

When you're sitting at the table you're meant to eat and to have a pleasent conversation with the people who are eating with you. There's a place and a time for singing and that's not it.

Etiquette it's not meant not to harm people, it's meant to provide a certain set of "rules" in order to make coexistance possible.

I don't know. But my mom has a little rhyme: "Sing at the table, whistle in the bed, the Boogerman will get ya by the hair of the head."
I think it's one of those things old timers made up to enforce table manners.

Interfering with conversation?
Perhaps leading to rowdy behaviour?

Just a couple of guesses. I hardly think that the rule is hard and fast, as there are times when we sing grace, sing happy birthday or any other time that we all agree that it is amusing or fun to do!
We had some visitors from another country who serenaded us with their own folk music. It was hardly impolite but absolutely lovely!

I don't think it is particularly rude in all circumstances. My family always sings a chorus of Old Stewball Was A Racehorse before every meal.

Singing at the table! Wow! What a delightful thing to do when the family is together!
I think I'll start a new custom for my family.
Thanks for the idea.

If it's a family meal and you are the only one singing, it implies that you don't want to talk to anyone and don't want anyone else to have a conversation.

It annoys the people that you are sitting with. And, it is bad etiquette to annoy people at the dinner table.

Well, if the singing's really bad, it could kill a few appetites.
