I ordered a sub woofer box off of ebay and i wanted to port it to better match the airspace needed for my sub woofer. I find out my port specs that i needed and called a local audio store to find a port. This person tells me that if i try to port this box, it will mess up the sound and would ruin the box because a port must be installed when constructing the box and that its just plain "physics"--that it wouldn't work because the box is already sealed and you cannot port it. Is this true? and if so, why?

If the box volume is the right size for your subwoofer in a ported configuration, then there's no reason you cannot add a port. Remember that the port volume needs to be subtracted from the box volume in your calculations.

What you can't do is take a sealed box of the correct size, add a port, and assume it's going to work well. The volume requirements are different for ported boxes vs. sealed boxes, given the same subwoofer.

A ported box need to have about double the airspace of a sealed box to sound right. You might be able to get away with porting a sealed box if you stuff it with some "pillow stuffing". It helps to trick the speakers in to thinking its in a bigger box by slowing down the airwaves. I think you need 1lb of stuffing for every cubic foot of space you have

you can do it but i would suggest stuffing it with some kind of audio stuffing to make it sound right, i would suggest to keep adding stuffing till it sounds right to you. what the audio shop guy probably meant by that is that a tuned ported box is made in a way that makes the sound waves come out in a specific way. some of the best boxes are made this way. go to this site to learn anything you want to know. you could find ways to make you project better.
