This has been bugging me for a while, but was it really common practice for fishermen to carry swords around?

I think it says he took the sword from one of the guards.

Sorry. I remembered it incorrectly. John says it was Peter's sword.

In Luke 22:36 ff. Jesus tells the disciples to get swords. Peter tells Jesus they have two already, and Jesus says that is enough. The purpose of Luke 22 is to tell the disciples that they must now go out on their own, without Jesus, since He would die and rise from the dead and ascend to heaven. As a result, on their missionary trips, they would face times when a sword might be necessary to protect against wild animals or other dangers. So, Peter had the sword, but he used it contrary to what Jesus intended in the garden of Gethsemane.

This is a good question. It does seem unusual for a so-called pacifist group. For sure, he wasn't carrying that thing to simply clean his fingernails and swords aren't real handy for gutting fish. Why? Indeed!

Additional: The sword was not retrieved from one of the guards, it was brought by Jesus' followers. Look it up Matt 26:51; Mark 14:47; Luke 22:50. To those who say otherwise I say do your research before spouting off about something you know nothing about.

Read Matthew 26:47-56, and Luke 22:47-53 and also see John 18:2-11. It was part of the normal attire back then to carry a sword just as it is today to carry a pocket knife or ink pen.

some translations say he was "carrying a sword", some say he 'brought a sword' and some say he 'drew a sword'. then Jesus tell him to put the sword away so, I don't know the answer to your question but...does it really matter. I think is super cool that he cut the guys ear off!!!!

Maybe the disciples bought a few swords for self protection from robbers seeing how they were traveling all around the country with Jesus.

Prophet Jesus told ALL of his "disciples" to carry the truth of Allah in one hand, and a sword in the other. If anyone denies this, they haven't read the New Testament! Also see Luke 22 : 36 he tells them to sell their cloak to purchase one!

To be out and about at night, it would seem a good practice to be able to defend oneself if necessary.

Remember the person who fell among thieves and was cared for by the Good Samaritan? He was attacked and beaten. Crime and thievery were existent in that day.

Carrying around protection would have been good common sense, particularly if you were out at night and particularly if people (Sanhedrin) had the desired take your life.

He took the swords from one of the soldiers that accompanied Judas when he handed Jesus over to be crucified.

Because it makes the story more dramatic, so whoever wrote it decided to give him a sword.
