Hi.

I dont think love is cruel. I think that the absence of love by one of the two peope involved is cruel. Or when things are so hard to understand that one person wants to give up. I found this great quote online by someone who had a similar question (see below and link). Maybe other people's answers can bring understanding too.

"Love doesn't hurt, on the contrary, it is amazing! It is the absence of mutual love that hurts.
Love is a bond between two people that goes beyond logic and reason, one that overwhelms the mind and senses enough to do things that are aporiable. But when only one person out of these two have this emotion they might not realize that the other might not reciprocate and it is this naiveity that blinds them from the plain and simple truth that they might get hurt as if they were in a relationship that doesn't mean anything what so ever! When/if they do get hurt then they can't understand why this person, who apparently loved them, did what they did. The answer is quite simple: Either that other person doesn't reciprocate or they need reminding that what they are doing to those that they love the most is in fact hurting them! If they change their ways, at least enough to show that they desperately want to try, then they love you back. If they don't then they don't love you back.
Unfortunately the word love is used far too often or perhaps the bond associated with that word is perceived to be far stronger that it actually is. "

I've been thinking about your question some more so I thought I'd put some different thoughts down.

You know the Greeks I'm told believed in many different kinds of love. And when we don't have different words for each of these distinct emotions it can confuse us and our expectations.

If we had fewer expectations for erotic love to be everything I suspect love might be less disappointing. Nature is often thought of as cruel and I think this is because She is efficient and ruthless in pursuing her aims for selecting the best and combing great variety in support of diversity. Perhaps this is what you mean by "cruel."

The love spoken of in the Bible (erete) is something quite different. It is gentle and long-suffering. It's not demanding nor is it manipulative. Disappointment is met with patience. It meets frustration or a sense of cruelty with patience and understanding.

Love in itself is not cruel. Its the loss of, or lack of being loved that feels cruel. Is it cruel to love your children? Finding the love of your life is wonderful, but this doesn't happen to everyone. The most enduring love comes mostly from family and friends. If your lucky enough to find Hot, Passionate, and sexy love thats great, but if you don't, you still have your friends who love you............................ and we do!

Love is not cruel...
I believe in biblical definition of love:
"Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things; believes all things; hopes all things; endures all things. " (1 Corithians)...
This is unconditional love ...:)
God bless you all...:)
