I want to spend at least a week at sea and "get away" from my life in the US before arriving in Europe. From there back pack and bike across Europe and England. Then sail or fly back.

The freighter is probably cheaper and will probably take longer too. Try this web site as a start: http://www.juddspittler.com/freighterbum/basics.htm

Then click on the frequently asked questions link and I think it will cover a lot of your questions.

As I looked at the questions it appears that a freighter is about $50 a day cheaper than a typical cruise.

ALSO, do a google search for "freighter passengers" and you will find a bunch of info about freighter cruising
