No, you cannot get a green card based on your child's citizenship until that child is 21 and even then only after they make twice the poverty limit. So that is a lot of money for a 21 year old to have to make in order to sponser you as immigrants and then he/she is responsible for you and you cannot get on welfare nor can he for the entire time or it could disqualify you and they do ask you that on the applications and then they check.
The easier route is if you are a professional wait out the time period and/or apply for the Visa diversity lottery if you are from a country that is included in that.
The best thing I can recommend is you go to Catholic family services and talk to their immigration specialists.

This is not true. If you have a new born baby in the US the baby will be a citizen but your status nor your wife's status will change. The only advantage you will have from this is way down the line when the child is either 18 or 21 (not exactly sure), he or she will be able to apply for you for a residency (assuming you having got it through other channels), and this is only if he or she wants to apply for you (kids these days).
This could take a while, instead, if you are here with an H1 visa (is it H1 B Visa by any chance?) why don't you try and get your employer to sponser you. I have seen this happen before with two friends and they got out here on a working visa (H1 B) through full sponserships from two companies. They kept renewing the visa until the company appplied for a green card for them. It happened and now they are happily living here. This all took plalce in a time span of about 6-8 years, but hey, it's better than 18 or 21!
Good luck dude!

It's a rumor -- urban myth actually. The term is "anchor baby".
Yes, if a child is born in the US (other than at a foreign embassy) that child has automatic US citizenship. Per the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.
In years past, that granted parents of the child preferential status when applying to remain in the US. That stopped many year ago, when the US figured out that parents could easily take their children with them when deported, and the children could return later (as adults, or to some other relative) if the child wanted to exercise their citizenship rights.
So, no, having a child does not help your chances for change of immigration status. The only effect is whether the child can later claim US citizenship automatically by right of birth.

It is true. If your child is born in the US the CHILD is a US citizen.
However, my little sister has 2 kids that were born in the US. The girls are 6 and 3, and my sister and her husband (both from Russia) still do not have their green cards.
Her husband has a working visa and my sister only has a spouse visa that does not allow her to work.
Think twice before you will deside to have a baby just for a green card, because you might not be able to support this child, and it would not be fair.

Giving birth to a baby in the US makes the baby an automatic US Citizen regardless of the parents status. Having a baby in the US DOES NOT give the parents any higher up status. The status they were before the baby was born will remain the status after the baby is born. You need to go to your local immigration office for info on green cards. If this were the case we would have foreigners left and right ahving babies in our country just so they could stay here legally.... NOT TRUE AT ALL

Having a green card doesn't make you a citizen. It makes you a legal permanent resident who may at some time become a citizen. If born here you get a birth certificate.

If the baby is born in the U.S., then YES, it is automatically a U.S. Citizen. Whether or not that translates into obtaining a green card easily for you and your wife, I'm not sure. I know there are many cases of pregnant women who have their babies here and are deported anyway. But I really don't know all the in's and outs. I am only able to answer half of your question.

Your baby will be an American citizen but you will NOT get a green card just because you have a baby here. At least you are here legally. I hope you get your green card. People like you should have the chance to get green cards instead of illegal aliens who broke the law to be here. Good luck!
