I'll acceed that the most common forms of polygamy are horribly sexist, but polygamy need not be sexist by definition.

Additionally, many people with religious objections to polygamy fail to recognize the multitude of poligamists in their own religious traditions.

Considering that the primary purpose of marriage is raising healthy, well-adapted children, wouldn't multiple marriage make more sense? It seems to me that four or five parents could protect and nurture their children more easily and fully than just two.

Your thoughts?

I'm a Muslim now? That's news to me.

Thanks, but no thanks. Theism is not my style.

Perhaps I should clarify, as many people seem to derive connotations of the word "polygamy" that I am not trying to imply.

Polygamy is any situation under which more than two people enter into a marriage. I suppose I'm actually talking about "group marriages", wherein several people enter into a single partnership contract. This contract would be as legally binding as any other marriage contract, and would require legal voiding through a divorce proceding in order to be restructured, just like two-partner marriage.

If two, (or more), consenting adults want to marry...let them...if a man wants seven wives...it's none of my business...as long as they are consenting adults....likewise, if a woman wants seven husbands...again, it is none of my business...they have to make the bed in which the lay...not me. Likewise, two men, two women...as long as they are consenting adults...why do we want to police what other people do with their lives? It is none of our business.

The Book of Mormon calls polygamy an abomination except in those rare cases where the Lord authorizes it.

I don't think polygamy itself is morally wrong, but that kind of social structure can easily lead to abuse. All current spouses should have a say in new additions. All parties should enter of their own volition. All spouses should be treated with love and respect.

BTW, my 3rd great grandfather had 12 wives.

I think it is an immoral idea that some men have come up with who worship their sex organ. They are not concerned with the children out of these relationships. Many foreign countries who have multiple wives have children that are forced to beg on the streets because their parents do not have the resources to feed them. That is hardly responsible parenting.

Wanting to always have a source of satisfaction at their disposal. Seems to be more important to these men than the comfort and protection of their wives and children.

The jealous and hate in such a relationship would hardly be conducive to a happy child hood. Talk to the children raised under such a system. They would definitely not recommend it for their children. Any sane women or man who gives this any thought other than their sexual satisfaction who think?
What would happen if my husband brought home a young 16 year old virgin girl to play with in bed? Gee, how would that make me feel? Would that make me a better mother? a better wife?
How would I as a husband feel if I came home and found my wife had another man in bed with her having sex and she told me I took another husband? We are busy now see you later.
Do you feel that would make you a better father? A better husband?

You said think about it? Anyone with half a brain knows that is cruel and painful and just plain mean.
To keep them into submission you beat them until when a man dies who has multiple wives why do they have a party?
It is a cause for celebration, among the wives of the dead husband? Gee, I wonder why they do that?

I cannot believe these answers. Where was I the last 8 years? If that question would have been said before the days of Iraq and the Muslim take over it would have met with so much religious zeal that it would have formed a lynch mob.
Mormons who did that were a cult and deserved death by hanging. Now everyone agrees it is not a sin?
when did that happen? Did the churches change their believes or are we all Muslims now?
Did the pope say that we can now have multiple wives and I missed it? What about the Babtist church what is their stand?
I miss the days before the muslim take over it was simple you understood the rules. Now we have a whole new set of rules.
I will see what my wife thinks about me taking another one.

Can you see what the muslims are doing? they are bringing their ideas into our culture. They are not planning on conforming to our current laws but plan on changeing our laws to suit their beliefs. Everyone is agreeing with them.
We are a christian nation but it is rapidly becoming Islamic.
why don't we have multiple wives? 1Corinthians 6:9 Adulters will not inherit god;s kingdom. Matthew 5:27 you must not commit adultry.
1 Timothy 3: says to be a husband of one wife.
anything other than that was considered adultry.
Are we now going to forget the bible and exchange the book of morman or the koran in its place.
What Jesus said: is now null and void.
We can have two men and two women or one man and 12 wives. Should be bring all our bibles together or at least the new testament and lets have a fire for all the muslims to see we are now throwing away or new testament part of the bible for them. we need to rewrite all the laws so we don't offend any of them.

Polygamy would not be inherently immoral, what makes it immoral is lying about it or all parties not consenting.

Is for whether it should be legal, this is not a religious question per se. My answer would be that marriage being in the eyes of the law nothing more than a contract, contract law should be applicable, and so long as all of the parties are consenting to the contract and are legally able to enter into said contract, any arrangement should be *legal*.

In our custom isn't frequently suited by using fact it is not like the norm (that's frequently interior the U. S. defined by way of our Chritianity based foundation of regulations), yet there are lots of of folk who nonetheless do it. The regulation would not comprehend better than one spouse so our society says which could the the decrease. frequently, in a society the place adult men and girls folk have equivalent rights, polyamory is extremely complicated. maximum societies the place polygamy is the norm, tend to be male ruled and the ladies quite have little or no say in no count number if or no longer they're an basically spouse or no longer. interior the U. S. there are human beings in this comparable problem, even inspite of the undeniable fact that they might probable argue that the ladies do choose for to stay this variety, I even tend to think of they're very submissive women folk whom are compelled by way of their faith to prepare such issues. on the different hand, there are a lot of human beings in polyamorous relationships whom at the instant are not married, yet share their lives with distinctive companions.... it quite is ordinarily completed effectively, yet as a popular rule, human beings tend to pair off, so with extra human beings in a relationship all invloved could safeguard and be open with all different individuals interior the relationship in any different case there will be jealousy. i do no longer hink you may say it particularly is immoral inspite of the undeniable fact that by using fact as long as each and every physique in touch is a consenting grownup and as long as each and every physique is user-friendly with one yet another, then no one gets injury and, consequently, no injury is finished.... meaning, it particularly is no longer immoral.

Are you forgetting that women are human beings just like men? They desire a man's undivided attention and loyalty. Even when Kings like David and Solomon evoked their so called kingly privilege it was fun in the beginning but over time it brought them more heartbreak than anything else. One of David's kids from one of his wives was in competition with one of the kids from Davids other wife. Davids throne was the prize and his son Absalom decided he would have his father David killed and Absalom would then seize the Throne by force. He had already carved out a cue from Davids army. God never cared for polygamy even when they were doing it. Here is an interesting note though, God judged David and Solomon for their polygamy but God honored David's pit-bull-like faith. God did not like Solomon the genius turning to idol worship. It was the direct result of Solomon's many pagan wives influence.

I do not feel polygamy, or polyamory are immoral at all. Yes they should be legal. This is a personal choice of the people involved in the relationship. There are good reasons for the current polygamy laws, but they do not take into consideration those who would mutually agree to such. In cases where all concerned could live happily, without conflict or emotional injury, I do not feel society has the right to tell people what they can or cannot do in their personal lives.

i think that nothing is inherently immoral. things are only good or bad because we call it that. in the case of polygamy id have to say that i dont agree with it, or at least its not something i want to do. it hink there would be a lot of jealousy involved. i dont know if it should be illegal, i think the government should be here to protect the rights of its citizens not decide what rights they should have and who should have them

Yes, many religious heroes were polygamists. Abraham and David for example. But with both women and men being allowed, it could get very messy. The women of Abraham and David were subservient. Women are very different today and rightfully so.
