Panto or Pantomime is a traditional British entertainment, nowadays usually performed at Christmas time. It will contain certain stock characters: Principal Boy-the male romantic lead, played by a girl( good legs preferable for traditional costume of tunic & tights.) Principal Girl -female love interest also played by a girl. The Dame- an old lady, mother of one of the main characters, played by a man. An evil character, usually male, who may have designs on the person or inheritance of the principal girl. Then there will be various small parts of henchmen, natives etc and a chorus.
There will be audience participation "He's behind you!") or similar, and plenty of songs old and new. There will also be a certain amount of "double entendres" (words with 2 meanings) mainly for the adults in the audience. There are a number of well-known children's stories that form the basis of panto - Mother Goose, Dick Whittington, Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp, Babes in the Wood, etc. Pantos usually appeal to the British sense of humour and don't always travel well overseas. Hope this helps

It's somewhere in between I suppose! "Panto" is short for the word "Pantomime". They are usually loosely based on a fairytale of some description, eg. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty etc, but they'd usually contain some completely unrelated music, eg. the latest pop songs etc. They're usually very funny, and they're the type of thing you'd bring the kids to at Christmas time.

In the UK the word pantomime applies almost exclusively to a form of non-silent comic theatre traditionally performed at Christmas for a mixed audience of adults and children... In the US it means the opposite! (and is called mime) Hope this helps :)
