I'm 20, have no college education, and live in Oregon. Right now I'm working as a Realtor; I'm working under another broker who was a top producer for 15+ years with re/max. I know that he is using me to do a lot of his BS work, and I'm really not making a lot of money.. Yesterday I went and talked with a representative for Comcast, and they are hiring for cable technicians. The money initially would be at least twice as good, & the job is more 'mindless.' but not as good in the LONG run... Any advice as to what I should do?

I am licensed as a broker. The reason I'm working with the top producer is because he is teaching me the in's and out's of what works. I do a lot of the talking with potential clients. with the way the market is (horrible) though, It's tougher to make it. Thanks for the answers

The comcast $$$ would be steady and is easier for some people to manage to pay rent & vehicle costs etc .
The realtor $$$ ( currently dropping like a rock due to the falling home market ) is hugely variable and only works for people who save the whole commission check because they may not have a good sale for another 4 , 5 or 6 months and know they need to stretch that $$$$ for a long time .

Go for comcast and do the realtor as a 2nd job until you get it established better .

Real Estate is a great field when it's up, but when it's down like now...you may only close 1 deal a month, believe me, I work in real estate. You have to decide what is best for your situation right now. If you are already licensed, you can stay with real estate part time and take the Comcast job. If you are getting the throw aways from this top producing realtor there is no reason why you should have to stay full time. Talk to your boss about working from home or after regular office hours. You can always work for Comcast until the market picks back up and a you have a few closings under your belt, then go back full time to real estate. I suggest making a list of pros and cons for staying and for leaving. With real estate you can always swing in and out of the business, just have to update your license every few years.

the best job advice I ever received was from a headhunter...Always keep in mind that no job is forever. And if you make a mistake by leaving, you can always go back!

If you want to be a realtor, continue to do the grunt work but in the mean time, find out how you go about taking classes to become a realtor - just because you don't have a degree doesn't mean you can't do what that broker does. Learn and do. You say you don't have a college education - is that by choice? I have been trying to finish college for 15 years! I had a lot of life and medical setbacks that prohibited me from finishing. Even if you don't want to focus on a "career" per se, go to school while you're still young. Then you'll have your pick of jobs! Good luck to you!

Stick with the reality job. You are right that it will be better in the long run. The comcast job may pay more right now, but how long until you hit the highest pay you can make? Not to mention you'll probably get bored quickly and not want to stick with it even-why take a job like that when you are complaining about doing BS work where you're at? You say you're only 20 and have no college education...I say that you should be patient and learn the trade your in to become successful. At 20 you'll always have to do BS work...

If you're just working for money...take the Comcast job. If you're working to get to a specific place in your career, go with the one that will give you the best experience for what you need to do.

If you have your Realtor's license, then see if you can go on your own or work with a different Realtor. If you aren't licensed, then maybe another company or Realtor where you'll get the experience you want to get will be the answer.

If you want to do something completely outside of real estate, then make the switch now while it's easier.

Comcast pays more and might have college reimbursement. I would check to see what their benefits are- and if you can get them to reimburse you for college classes, get in gear and take classes to get your Associates degree- which you can do quickly, inexpensively at a local community college- stick with a plan and go for it. Then you are not limited by being a realtor OR a cable guy- you can choose what you really want to do- and you can make ends meet in the mean time. In no time you'll have a degree under your belt! You can do it!
Mindless can be good if you are going to school on the side..It will give you time to mull over school subjects during the day...
Think long term. Good luck!!

Have you actually got your realtor license? If that's something you're good at, you could potentially make a lot of money in the long run...definitely much more than cable technicians.

What's Important To You? There is no way anyone here can tell you what you should do in this situation, and it be credible information. You know your situation, you know your goals, so only you can make that call. What I can tell you is that you should assess this situation based on which position best lines up with what you are trying to accomplish with your life, and not just the next few years. Hope this helps!
