Many furniture stores have discount outlets for discontinued items, or "scratch and dent" sales with furniture that is slighly damaged. If you can tolerate the thought of used furniture, the Salvation Army and Goodwill Stores have furniture, but a better idea might be a high end consignment shop, which have mark-down policies when merchandise "lingers" past a certain time period.

I'm not sure what stores you have where you are from. I'm from Canada and I'm looking for a couch as well. Some places I noticed that are affordable are IKEA, Jysk, XS Cargo...or you can always try looking at Sale Item at Leons, The Brick, etc.
I might resort to a futon though..they're always cheaper than a sofa

Check out Freecycle.org. I belong to this organization which involves the recycling of goods between people in your area. You can post an item to be given away or needed. Everything is free of charge. We just recently acquired a loveseat with a pullout bed which was like new in shape. I have seen everything from food to furniture to cars offered. It is also nice, too, if you have something you don't need or use anymore to be able to post it for someone else who might need it. Just check out freecycle.org and it will direct you to towns or cities in your area that have paticipating organizations. Membership is free and you can have the ads e-mailed to you on a daily basis or you can browse them on site at your leisure. Photos of items are also posted on site. I hope this helps you out ! Pass the word on Freecycle!
