John & Charles Wesley were priests of the Church of England. They believed that the church had become to institutionalized and that it needed to touch people's lives and draw them closer to Christ. They began by starting small groups whose purpose was to hold each other accountable for the growth in faith.
Out of this beginning grew the United Methodist Church (in America - the oldest). The main differences are:
1. Sacraments - The Catholic Church recognizes seven we only recognize Communion and Baptism
2. Church Authority - As has been mentioned, the Catholic Church believes that the pope is the highest authority in the church. We do not accept the authority of the pope though we do respect him as a devote and spiritual leader.
3. As a member of the Reformation we believe that the scripture is its own authority. The Catholic Church believes that scripture must be interpreted by Tradition.
4. We believe that faith alone is sufficient for salvation but true faith will result in good works. The Catholic Church believes that good works and faith are both required for salvation.

Here is what I thought. I am a Catholic. I had a best friend that was Methodist. I used to go to church with him on occasion. I thought their youth groups were kind of silly. Even at 14, I knew that I wasn't going to be enlightened by a bunch of other kids sitting around, playing pinball, and briefly analyzing scripture. It was fun though. However, the thing that I couldn't swallow was a discussion that we had on some major issue like abortion or being gay or something. the youth minister informed us that the leadership of the First United Methodist Church had voted and did a 180 degree turn on what the church believed on that issue. I cannot understand how a group of people can say that God wants one thing on Monday, and then change their minds and say he wants it the other way on Tuesday.
That is why I am starting to drift from the Catholic church now. I see a lack of consistency.

Catholics follow the teachings of their catechism, as well as the Bible. The Catholic church is very formal and follows a lot of rituals.
The Methodist faith is based on the teachings of John Wesley.
While Catholicism is a main branch of Christianity, Methodism is a branch of Protestantism, which is the other main branch of Christianity.

"What separates us as believers in Christ is much less than what unites us." (Pope John XXIII)
Almost all important doctrine is completely agreed upon between Catholic Christians and other Christians.
Here is the joint declaration of justification by Catholics (1999), Lutherans (1999), and Methodists (2006):
By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works.

There are many minor doctrine issues and some major cultural traditional differences which, I believe, do not matter that much.
A Catholic worships and follows Christ in the tradition of Catholicism which, among other things, recognizes that Christ made Peter the leader of His new Church and Pope Benedict XVI is Peter's direct successor.

Catholics do not believe that Methodists are going to hell.
I don't believe that Methodists think that about us either.

The biggest difference must be the Papacy. Methodists are Protestant. Protestants don't believe we need an intermediary (the Pope) between us and God. We also believe the Bible is the final authority. For this reason, we don't worship "Mama Mary" or pray to her image. She's not God, Jesus is.

I don't know a lot about Methodist teachings, but my guess is that the key issues where the two denominations differ are
* the papacy
* sacraments (esp. the nature of the eucharist)
* salvation (works, faith, or both?)

The Catholic Church is an imitation of God's church. Methodists follow many of the Catholic traditions.

Catholicism is genuine Christianity. Jesus commonplace the Catholic Church in 33AD,not 38,000 denominations, or non denominations as in Protestant Christianity. As for Catholic Christians we have faith interior of here: We have faith in one God, the father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all this is considered and unseen. We have faith in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, forever begotten of the father, God from God, mild from mild, genuine God from genuine God, begotten, not made, one in being with the father. via Him all issues have been made. For us adult men and our salvation He got here down from heaven: by ability of the capability of the Holy Spirit, He replaced into born of the Virgin Mary , and became guy. For our sake He replaced into crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and replaced into buried. on the third day He rose back in success of the scriptures: He ascended into heaven and is seated on the superb hand of the father. he will come again in glory to choose the living and the ineffective, and his kingdom will have no end. We have faith interior the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of existence, who proceeds from the father and the Son. With the father and the Son, he's worshiped and glorified. He has spoken for the period of the Prophets. We have faith in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We properly known one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. we look for the resurrection of the ineffective, and the existence of the international to come again. Amen. Even tho Catholic and Protestants the two have faith in and worship the comparable God , the Protestant church homes have a greater watered down version of Christ. The Protestant church homes only recognize two of the 7 Sacraments that Jesus gave to His church. With the 38,000 denominations of Protestant Christians their ideals are all distinctive being that anyone have a distinctive interpretation of the bible. Catholic Christian †
