people suffering from mental disability must go to school because they need help with adaptive skills, which are skills needed to live, work, and play in the community. Teachers and parents can help a child work on these skills at both school and home. Some of these skills include:

communicating with others;
taking care of personal needs (dressing, bathing, going to the bathroom);
health and safety;
home living (helping to set the table, cleaning the house, or cooking dinner);
social skills (manners, knowing the rules of conversation, getting along in a group, playing a game);
reading, writing, and basic math; and
as they get older, skills that will help them in the workplace.
For eligible school-aged children (including preschoolers), special education and related services are made available through the school system. School staff will work with the child's parents to develop an Individualized Education Program, or IEP. The IEP is similar to an IFSP. It describes the child's unique needs and the services that have been designed to meet those needs. Special education and related services are provided at no cost to parents.

Depending on your age and your mental disability, the school will be required to accomodate your needs at the school.

There are some disabilities that must be cared for in a private environment and again, depending on age and disability, may be cared for by the school system in the home.

These requirements are federal and apply to all school age individuals and some older people.

No if your over the age your state allows you to drop out. But I DO NOT recommend that. People have found that giving into their mental disabilities can make them that much worse. Try finding a support group and some medication (if you already have not). School gives you SO many oppurtunities in life. It may not seem like it now but it will be a decision you will come to regret if you stop going!

Yes. The school is required by ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) to accommodate special needs - mental or physical.

There are several options in most states, which include getting a special IEP to address your specific needs. Almost any mental disability you can think of has already been addressed somewhere. Psychiatrists, social workers, school counselors and teachers work together in your intrest.

Home schooling is an option, but often social skills deteriorate somewhat unless another social outlet like a CPR clubhouse is used. (CPR-Community psycho-social rehabilitation)

Yes you have to go to school but they have to provide special services for you. The only way you don't have to go to school is if you have tutors or you are home schooled. Schools are required to provide all the services and help you need now a days. You are protected by the american disablilities act if you live in the USA.
