Pride. Pride is the ultimate sin. If you didn't have pride, you would be humble enough to have faith. If you didn't have pride, there would not exist envy or competition. This would lower the importance of money, and make people less corrupt.

There are considered to be three causes of sin; The World, The Flesh and the devil. The world represents all the ways we sin in dealing with others, The flesh is inward sin, and the devil is the great "tempter."
"Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world have mercy on us" we say at Mass. Sin here is everything we encounter in daily life in dealing with others.

Too much pride prevents people from believing.
1 Corinthians 1:18-21
18.For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
19.For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."
20.Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
21.Since the world in all its fancy wisdom never had a clue when it came to knowing God., God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

I doesn't have to be a single sin. Sin can be a condition, specific or multiple transgression, or the act of committing one or multiple transgression. John used it in the general sense simply to describe part of Jesus's mission.
I believe that each of our sins ultimately begins with a degree of selfishness.

The ultimate sin is the abuse all of these crazy cults have perpetrated across the globe. From the raping of nature to young boys, you and your fellow cultists are a scourge on the planet.

I'd say Pride is more damming than unbelief. As damming means to stop progress, and progress is what we are here to do, pride would be more harmful to us.

Pride is why satan was kicked from heaven--and who is the Prince of the earth? a multitude of sins stem from this--so the root sin seems to be pride!
