The supposedly Christian church that I go to has gotten so mired down in politics, personal friendships, and personal animosities that I feel I'm just better off to stay home, and read the Bible, and ignore these folks.

I don't think you should stay home and just read the bible because the bible states that we are suppose to come together and fellowship in worship. That's how we gain our strength.
However, you may want to find another church. One that focuses on a RELATIONSHIP with Christ..instead of mere religion (which can have allthose things..politics..personal friendships, etc.).
Where you go to church is not as important as whether they are helping you and your walk/relationship with Christ.

I agree entirely! I posted a question some time ago entitled "what is wrong with the church of today?" I had made similar observations myself. The only reason the New testament church exists is to carry out the Great Commission. Yet it seems that most churches today are nothing more than social clubs which ignore the very purpose that they were created for. I'm thankful that we attend an independent church which is entirely Bible centered. There is still no other way for a person to be saved than to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. All the "good social intentions" in this world done through a church can't and wont lead someone to a saving knowledge of the truth. It became apparent to me over the years that most churches of today have "lost it" and they are going no where. The simple truth is that all men have a desperate need for the saving grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and most of them don't seem to know it. The blame for this falls squarely on the church as the Great Commission was only ever given to the church and no other body has the authority to carry it out. The Gospel message seems to have become distorted by man over the years and today we have a whole lot of well intentioned people who haven't yet come to the knowledge of the fact that all men harbor a condition which eventually sends them to hell. It's called "sin in the flesh" which is a condition passed on to all men from Adam. Tragically today, the church has failed to address this problem and for many, their church attendance has become nothing more than a way of life. I agree entirely with what you are saying.

It may be time to start visiting other curches. We did this as a family. We left our small town baptist church because of some HUGE problems in it. We then visited a new church every Sunday for about 2 months before settling on one that my parents agreed with. It ended up that it was a very large church, over 6,000 parishaners each Sunday. But the pastor was true in his faith and that came through in his sermons. Yes, the church had all types of social activities, some of which we joined in. This was a blessing for my family as we lived in the country and didn't see many people otherwise. But the heart was behind this church.

I don't believe it is the size of the church that matters, but each individual one is different. Change isn't a bad thing if you make it for the right reasons. And if you visit the other churches, you may find you do like yours still.

Good luck on your decision.

Fellowship is actually an important discipline in the Christian life, and is commanded in the Bible. Being out of fellowship, and never interacting or meeting with any other Christians is actually disobedient to God.

Not all churches are only social. Some are, but definitely not all. My church is very social because people like each other and want to spend time together. BUT members and pastors alike also take care of people, do outreach and service in the community, help people who need it, do mission work, teaching, health, things like that.

First church my husband and I went to was mostly made up of his family. Before we were saved they voted in a pastor and man did everyone love him. Then about a year into him being there we both was saved. Things began to change. The people of that church began to hate the pastor and it showed. His family was trying to rule the church. His sister was bucking against the pastor and so was this other man. Finally the pastor left leaving me and my husband there. It became harder for us to stay, but we didnt want to leave if it wasn't God's will. I was so glad when God let us leave that church. The church is still there and still spiritualy dead too.

Yes some churches are doing this now. I found a smaller church to go to close to my home and love it. What churches are forgetting is that God is the same today as he was yesterday and we as the church need to remember this and stop making church more of a recreation center. Please dont get out of church just find a small one to go to and see if you like it better.

I was raised in a Presbyterian church and as far as I could tell being a social club was its primary mission.

I have not been back there in the last 30 years.

Don't forsake yourself the assembly.

There is power and teaching in church. If you are happy were you are going, start praying that the Lord would show you a vibrant, living church. One that will minister to you, and you to them.

Perhaps in the while, you could have home church. That way you aren't without fellow believers to agree with.

I see a lot of that in the Church I attend. I plan on leaving to find a more spiritual and mature Church.

Churches are becoming more of a social club. God Help them!
You need to find a Bible Believing Church and attend it because God has reserved Special Blessing for people when they assemble together to Worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. Amen

John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

John 4:23-27 (King James Version)
King James Version (KJV)

23But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

25The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

26Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
