Every Italian who reads this question is cringing right now.
Butter prevents the sauce from clinging to your pasta. Butter is not necessary unless it is an ingredient in the sauce you plan to top it with.
Follow package directions and you will have no problems.

Yes you can make it w/out butter. If your talking about just macaroni, you can use a little ;veggie or olive oil to keep it from sticking. Even a squirt of cooking oil spray works.

You will be just fine without butter. I've gotten halfway thru making mac & cheese to open the fridge and realize I have no butter. It tastes a little bit different, but it's good just the same!!!

You can use 2 tablespoons of oil instead of butter and you should not have an issue with sticking.

Yes, cooking pasta without butter is just fine.
Are you talking about boiling macaroni or making mac and cheese?
Either way, you can make it without butter.

Use an oil - olive oil, vegetable oil, canola oil. About a teaspoon or two of one of these will prevent it from sticking. I use these in place of butter actually.

I was going to suggest olive oil like Start did. However, I never use anything. Neither does anyone in my family (Italians). As long as you stir it frequently, it won't stick.

you don't have to use butter.....when you make your cheese sauce and your making it in the microwave (melting) add extra milk or chicken broth...if your are making a roux first, just use olive or veggie oil then proceed to add your flour, milk and cheese........
