Keep a crate and don't pen her in the kitchen or any other room. Only use the crate when you are unable to watch her but make sure the crate is of the proper size. Crates should just be big enough to allow the dog to stand up, stretch and turn around in. Dogs will not relieve themselves in the area they are sleeping unless they absolutely cannot hold it. Also there should not be anything left in the crate that the puppy can chew such as stuffed animals or blankets. If she does happen to have an accident in the crate these will retain moisture and the mess will be harder for you to clean.

Both, Gate the dog in a room that its easy to clean up a mess, but not the kitchen because they can get into food, Get a crate that is a bit bigger than your dog and place a bowl of food in the back of the cage, and next to it, blace a bowl of water. Simply have the crate in the pin.

I use a playpen b/c I am trying to train him to use the newspapers as well in case he has to go when I'm not around. So far there is a little accidents here and there in the pen but then it's normally going great coz I feel that there is more room for him.

I have my two chihuahuas in a cage when I am away from home. I have a comfy dog bed in there with their favorite toys. They are so used to be in there that even when they are just tired they go in there to take a nap

Depends on the size of the dog. A small dog would be more comfortable in a playpen, a Large dog would be safer in a carrier.

I put my puppy in an unused bathroom with crate in the room when I am not around. She will sleep in the crate and play outside the crate. And also put wee-wee pad inside the room.
