I'm going on vaction and we're going to my uncle's cabin near some wooded area. I'm afraid to bring my one year old cat up there. Should I ask a friend to watch him or should I put my fear aside and let him explore

I would honestly have your friend watch him at home where he is safe. Because if he goes out into the woods there is risk he could get hurt or injured. He could end up lost or some place he ought not to be. Depending on what animals live there, he could be killed.

Sounds drastic, I know, but I think the best bet is that the friend watces him. That way you will not have to worry constantly and have that ruin your vacation. You will know then that kitty is safe and take care of.

Get a friend to watch the cat, that way you know the cat is safe. The standard advice is when you bring a cat to a new place, have the cat stay inside for at least 2 weeks so he knows where his new home is, otherwise there is a very good chance he will go looking for a better place to live.

I'm afraid that if you let your cat outside in the wilderness right away, that he will leave trying to find is real home and get lost. Also, wilderness has all sorts of predators, and depending on where you are at, he could run into bears, coyotes, fox, wolves, raccoons, traps and you would never never see him again.

I don't know what kind of animals live around your uncle's cabin, but I do know that coyotes will chase down and kill a cat. Your cat could become a little too interested in a poisonous snake and get bitten. A fight between a mother raccoon and a cat will end in the death of your cat. What I'm saying is that there's just too much danger for your cat. For any cat. Cats in the wild have a lot of enemies and very short lives. Keep kitty at home and ask someone to give him fresh food and water every day.

I wouldn't take the chance on having him get lost by accident. Coyotes kill cats, so do martins and fishers. There's ticks to worry about as well. It'd be better for the cat to stay at home and be taken care of where he'd be safe.

I would not take him. Cats are closer to their wild side than dogs and either your cat will wander too far and become lost or choose to stay longer than you do and you will end up leaving him thinking he is lost. This of course is the worst case scenario but why chance it. You could ruin a nice trip and lose your cat...if you have a safe place to leave him,,,leave him.

Cats associate themselves closely with places. Your cat will be happier if he stays home and has someone come in to look after him once a day.

Moving is hard on cats. Vacations are even worse.

Explore in the cabin. 1year is fine. With claws for outdoor.
