My female dog friend, after being an outdoor dog all her life, & not loved by her owners, has been escaping lately from her fenced in yard. I visit her daily & give her 3 milk-bones everyday for 10 yrs. & lots of hugs over the fence. Now, she's chained, choking , & miserable. Her neighbors love her too. Her owner says she's in heat.???

I dont see why a 10 year old female couldnt go into heat I mean if she hasnt been spayed then I would say yes she can go into heat at 10 but I dont understand why they picked to chain her up outside instead of 10 years ago getting her spayed that would of been alot better and nicer to the dog i mean they have feelings to it is just sad to see animals all chained up outside for no reason just because people lost intrest in the dog or dont want to care for them anymore becuase they dont want to spend the time and moey to get there animals fixed

I've seen 10 year old dogs come into heat. Yes, it's possible, but not very common. Why isn't she spayed???? (Nevermind, you answered that when you said she wasn't loved by her owners!). If they made the determination that she was in heat beacuse of a discharge, I'd have her checked by a vet. I know that will be difficult under these circumstances. At her age, it's much more common for a female dog to develop pyometria (severe uterine infection). The main symptom after discharge is a foul smell, and the discharge can range from yellow to bloody. This is a life threatening infection.
For the sake of the poor dog, see what you can do for her.

Yes

You know I do not know where you live, however in some states there are tethering laws and dogs can be taken away if they are left on a chain all day. I would suggest that you contact your local animal authorities and ask them what you can do. Possibly, they will come and take the dog and then you or one of your neighbors can adopt her and give her a good ending to her miserable life.

Yes she can. I have a twelve yr. old still coming in heat. I didn't get her spayed due to seizures. But..... why don't you talk to the people & ask them if you can take the dog on walks or possibly even adopt her from them, and they can have visiting rights. Just tell them you really would like a companion, don't make it sound like their misstreating it. Just an idea. :):):)
