I support the Act for Stolen Children , GuluWalk, and just about any children's charity. But the two I mentioned above are my favorites - they help the children in Uganda that have to walk miles alone every night to safety to run from the LRA. If you don't know of this cause - you should read up on it.

I tend to help small, "locally grown" charities - the ones that have been around just for a few years and really need the money, especially those in the arts.

Before I give money to a charity, I look at their 990 (their annual tax return - you can go to http://www.guidestar.org to see them) and see where their money is going.

The thing that is a huge turn-off to me is getting a donation solitication in the mail and you see all of the money it took them to print up these slick promotional pieces. I don't give to org's like that because I wonder if this will be how my donation will be spent.

I support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They are very good at organizing different events where you can raise money. I recently went on a hike in Yosemite National Park with LLS's Hike for Discovery. They also organize Team in Training where you can participate in a Tri-atholon either as a team or single person. I also support the Susan G. Komen Breast cancer Foundation, Avon's walk for a cure, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. If you know of any great organizations to support please let me know

One of my favorites are the United Methodist Committee on Relief because 100% of donations go to relief. The operating budget of UMCOR is fulling funded by the United Methodist Church.

Next is the Salvation Army.

Yes, our church supports those Ugandan children also. I sponsor a child in Africa and one in CA.

The LRA is a misnomer. These guys are just a military cult evolved from a tribe.
