Papers are very expensive. I want a to get a lab. I can't really afford to get the papers, do you think it matters? Is it worth getting them?

You don't "need" papers with a dog, unless you intend to breed and register the dog. If you are getting a companion animal, papers don't prove how good or bad it is. The dog will love you and be your friend just the same.
If you want to breed/show/register the dog with a dog club, then your motives are different and the papers are necessary.

"Papers" are just a breeders way of signifying to you, the buyer, that what we've told you about the parentage of the dog is true. I'm curious about the part where you say "I can't really afford to get the papers". Is someone trying to sell you a dog and then for an additional charge give you the papers? Because if that's the case and the dog's papers are AKC papers, that is against AKC rules. An AKC registered dog's papers cannot be sold in addition to the price of the dog.
As to whether or not it is worth getting the papers, if you intend to spay or neuter the dog, then not necessarily. But if you think you might ever like to do hunt trials or performance events (all of which are GREAT activities with your dog!) then the papers would be worth getting. I automatically give papers to my puppy buyers from both UKC and AKC. It's the right thing to do. If you are dealing with someone who doesn't do that, you need to re-think getting a dog from them.

The only reason for papers is breeding or showing the dog. Its still a good dog even without them.

papers are just proof the dog is pure. i have a german shepherd, but he doesn't have papers. he looks pure. it doesn't matter. i think it's just if you want to find a mate for the dog and sell the puppies.

Yes, It shows you own the dog, and if you ever want to show it you can. IF you have papers.

Possibly not much good. Why pay a whole lot
more for an inbred animal. Mongrels are better!
