The steel toe makes the boot heavy, which can in turn put some strain on your ankle and knee until they get strong enough. They will.

However, the first time someone drops a granite countertop or a stack of 2 x 6's on your toes, you'll think it's worth it.

I have never heard that about steel toe boots, but a friend of mine got some titanium toed boots and thinks they are the best boots he's ever had.

Some people are wary of steel toe boots because of the fact that if something extremely heavy falls on them the steel toe it can smash or cut them off. However, in carpentry you most likely won't incur any excessively heavy objects. I would suggest a good pair of Timberlands, at least from my experience.

I answer this with a guys perspective of course, but will give it my best shot. First off, if your b/f is not emotionally supporting you, he is undermining your authority. You need to think about a new business partner (if he is a partner). Also, he is sabotaging the relationship , by not giving the proper respect to you. Dump him. I have worked with women in several trades in the past and presently as a trucker (18 wheelers) let me tell you that some women want that guy to step in sometimes, but others will be very happy to put us guys in our place and demand the respect that they deserve. I was an electrician many years ago and we had a female on one jobsite beat a man's butt for his treatment towards her. She was right to do it in my opinion. If you have one of your workers remove work from your hands, as the boss, it is your responsibility to discipline the worker, and take control of the situation. If you don't, they will all view you as weak, and walk all over you. You don't have to physically beat them up, but a day off without pay will get their attention. The cat calls is another issue. You also have to take control of this. It is considered sexual discrimination, and again as the boss you have a responsibility to control that. First offense should be a suspension for how ever much time you decide (depending on the severity).Second offense is termination. If your b/f doesn't support you here, drop him and the business and start your business over again or take up a court battle. Best of luck to you.

If an object heavy enough to cause the steel toe of your boot to crush or cut off your toes falls on you you are going to be minus some toes either way. Buy the steel toed shoes. Most contractors demand that their employees wear steel toes and it is mandatory on any job that is under OHSA jurisdiction.

My hubby prefers just the normal work boots, steel toe works when you drop something on your foot, plywood, hammer, a wayward nail from your modified nail gun.
