I have a co-worker who sits directly in front of me with a divider wall between us. All day he constantly drums a beat with his mouse (if you are not sure what I mean, pick up your mouse and slam it back on your desk over and over quickly to the beat of your favorite song). He does this ALL THE TIME!!! I have made a few joking comments such as, "Can I get a drum set too?" or giving the desk a kick, thinking he would get the hint. I am sure that this is an illness of his - any suggestions?

Buy him a trackball.

No, seriously, the correct way to tell him that the drumming is annoying him is to say. "your drumming is annoying me." Don't be funny, subtle, or mysterious, just be honest.

Tell him it's driving you nuts. You don't have to come across as angry when you say it, just tell him honestly. Do this a few times. If it's a nervous habit kind of thing for him, he may not be able to stop or may be doing it without realizing it, so be patient.

If he's just a jerk, you could do something noisy in response everytime he starts, but do you really want to get in a war of nerves over this or keep the work environment as friendly as possible? I personally don't think this "noise-for-noise" method would be good for peace. You might even annoy others and end up escalating the "percussion war". LOL

Are you in a position where you can play music with ear phones? That might help, too.

Tell him, face to face, without joking, that his drumming is irritating and distracting you from your work. How can he work himself? Doesn't he need to use his hands for something else other than drumming. Is he on the phone a lot?

If telling him doesn't work, you make have to a) ask to be moved, b) complain to a supervisor but this may create friction and damage your work relations with this person.

Perhaps moving to another seating location would be the easiest and best solution .

tape his mouse to the desk before he gets to work and leave a sticky note that says " this mouse should never leave the surface of the mouse pad. Stop Drumming." dont sign your name. Or do it one night when you know you will be out of the office but he will be in. otherwise just tell the guy.

No doubt he is drunk on the job as they say look at your co worker and 1 out of 12 are drunk or drinking on the job so get out of his way if possible.

Keep joking about it.
Maybe add some jokes about him stopping that... something like "One day you're gonna get here and your mouse will be gone and I won't know anything about it."
You get the idea.
