a common problem in older homes is the build up of molds and mildew in the walls and under the floors, frankly it's almost impossible to be rid of, with such symptoms as you describe you may want to move out rather than deal with the expense involved in getting rid of it. But you can have a specialist in mold and mildew removal come out and give you an estimate.

Yes! An old house CAN make you sick! If your house has EVER had a leak and started growing Black Mold you can be allergic to the toxins that it puts into the air! I saw a special on Extreme Makeover House Edition where that was happening. The syptoms sound the same! If it was me, I would call an environmental specialist out to do a mold inspection. Home inspectors will work or they can refer you to someone. Make sure they do an inside vs. outside air test. They will tell you at what level the mold count is and if it is safe to continue living in the house. It sounds like it isn't if you left and were better. We had this done in our home and they charged us $200.00. We had to have Mold Remediation done after a flood. Please refer to the internet on Black Mold Allergy for more info. Sorry to hear you are having trouble! Hope this helps!

You could have toxic mold. What is toxic mold?

When people are talking about toxic mold, they are talking about Stachybotrys chartarum (also known as Stachybotrys atra) pronounced stack-ee-bought-riss.

It is a type of mold that is blackish or greenish black in appearance. Not all mold that is black is Stachybotrys. The black mold found on bathroom tiles is not Stachybotrys. Stachybotrys may occur when there has been excessive long-term water damage. Health effects of exposure to this mold are similar to exposure of other molds but may include inability to concentrate and fatigue. Usually these symtoms dissapear after the contamination is removed.

If you walk into your home after being away for a while, you should be able to smell the mold. It will be a "musty" smell. If you have a basement, that is the best place to start looking for mold.

You might also have led paint. Or it might be where your house is located, is there a factory near by?

Some old houses have asbestos in the paint. There is also the possibility that it is your household cleaners making you ill. Many chemicals in cleaners can linger in your home for months. Most chemicals in the products you use are never tested by the government before being approved for use. You may consider alternatives to these products, there are companies out there that use NO chemicals in their products. They are cheaper and more effective than the toxic ones which you may currently use.

Exspecially if there is mold on the walls or if the flooring under your carpet or tyle is wet and rotten. You should also check under the house to for water leaks and such. Does your house smell? Also I'v heard if a cat pee's and its into the wood it can make you sick, but I heard that it would take quite a bit of that to make you ill, don't quote me on that one though.

Asbestos and/or toxic mold come immediately to mind.

Make sure you've got a carbon monoxide detector in the house, as well. That could easily produce the symptoms you described.

Serious mold issues can do that to a person or lead based paint dust breathed in can do it. I would get a large air filtration devise and put it in the bedroom when you sleep. Also air out the house often if you can.

Sounds like a mold problem. There are kits to test for mold at home depot and lowes they are only about $20. Well worth the cost with your symptoms.

I would have the house checked for mold as well as the carbon monoxide levels from a heating source or water heater if it uses gas.
