to be honest the more and more I'm reading the more and more I think the bible is nothing more than a book written by power hungry people as a way to control other people.

I don't say this to upset anyone, at the end of the day this is my opinion, nothing more nothing less.

As I understand it, we are supposed to have faith in god?
but the same book states that we are not allowed to look for proof of that god. It kinda seems to me that your not allowed to try and prove the existance of your god?

Yes, that's what completely destroyed my faith in religion.

To have blind faith makes no sense to me. Looking through history you can find all sorts of examples where the people were bent on believing one thing & opposed anyone who though differently. Look at Galileo & how they locked him up just for saying the earth wasn't the center of the universe.

I didn't go looking for proof simply because my faith was starting to shatter, but because I was curious & felt I didn't understand as much as I should. In the end nothing made sense & the Bible often contradicted itself so now I'm Agnostic (although plenty will equate that to being Atheist).

Yeah you are right, if there are no proof. Why do you bother? Dont believe anything they say unless there is some proof. You can call your-self a Godless or athiest from now on and your life wont be much different. Becasue you still need to eat, drink, sleep and sex. I am sure the God who may exist is not that personal and subjective.
Look at it this way, all civilzations have religion before they learn to write for history. There must be a reason, a reason to drive us curious. If there were only one god, and everyone believe in it. there will be no conflict and curiosity.
Those written words are more of crowd controlling purposes than anything about whether greater will exist.
If the God was the kindest and fairest and all knowing and all mighty, he wont allow you to believe in it for simply fear and whatever those stupids write. it will not have its creation to be disgrace in such a way. Free to do what you find rational and sound, that s why we freewill, passion and logical mind.

Trying to find proof of god will make you an atheist rather quickly. I speak from experience.

I have found this to be the case: Either you blindly believe what the church tells you, or you lose your faith. It is that simple. If you question anything... you WILL lose your faith.

I say this because it's entirely too obvious that religion is a sham. Anyone that critically examines it will see this. And that is why you see so many religious people fly into a rage at the slightest suggestion that their religion may be false. Those people will NOT consider such a thing. But that is the only reason they are still in the cult.

I find proof of the existence of God everywhere, I also cannot accept that we created ourselves, so there has to be a creator.

I am not sure where you are finding passages that state we are not supposed to search for the truth? I have not ran across them and the Catholic Church as well as the Protestant Church I went to before both have bible study and we explore all questions about faith.

I am over 40 and have never come across a Priest or Preacher that discouraged searching.

Maybe I am just lucky?

Peace be with you!

Because he's a real being that wants you to call upon him. Once you start with that, you can start building a relationship with God. God of the bible that is, and you can have some proof that your body so longs for.

You cannot have faith in anything that you don't believe in. For instance.. you can't have faith in someone that you just met, to be good to you. Of course not. You have to get to know the person. In the same way, you have to get to know God. He's right there.. beside you.. waiting for you to call on him. He wants a personal relationship with you.. 1 on 1.

We are not allowed to test God to prove to ourselves without a shred of doubt that he does in fact exist. Why? because that would strip us of our own free will. If God were to come here right now.. there would be no doubt that he is God, and the entire bible is a fact. But unfortunately, it would put the entire world under judgment at that very second.

"Seek and you shall find. Knock and the door shall be opened unto you". You need to seek, and start talking to him.

With love through Christ Jesus,

Dusty

By the way.. if you trust in another man, church, or whatever to give you a relationship with God, you are highly mistaken. He is a personal 1 on 1 relationship God. Just call on him. Thats all you have to do. I don't know if it could be more simple.

NewCatholic -- you say "I also cannot accept that we created ourselves, so there has to be a creator"

This is a logical fallacy. A False dichotomy to be precise.

No one is saying we created ourselves. Nor does there need to be a creator at all. Perhaps reality is simply based on something other than a god, which exists by necessity.

Which is a shame (and error in my opinion in the Bible) as there is experiential proof that can be found for God. You literally can find God.

some christians complain that science doesn't allow god as a possible explanation. but science is all about testing possible explanations. apart from the difficulty of devising a rigorous empirical test for divine causes, it's actually christianity that forbids one from testing god.

I'm desperate to believe but either people say 'just accept it on faith' or give very dubious evidence

eg saying everything requires a creator then exempting God from this rule.

or saying that millions of people believe so it must be true - millions of people believe in all kinds of things, many contradictory.
