Humans have not been proven to have souls, technically. But, as an animal lover and astute observer, I feel confident in saying that if we have souls animals do too. Why would I think that? Easy, I have owned many cats and a few dogs, lizards and birds. And I have spent plenty of time with each of them experimenting in mutual communication. The dogs and cats are the pets who show us their emotions and personalities the clearest, in my experience so far. And what to people think that the soul is? Our personalities in an energy form of some kind. I'm not entirely sure what happens to our life's energies after our bodies die, it is still one of life's mysteries. But many people have experienced human ghosts in different ways. I have not seen any human ghosts myself. But, out of the corner of my eye I often see cat sized shadows scampering about that vanish when I turn my head to look straight at them. And, while laying in bed, or on the couch covered in a sheet, both me and my husband have felt the distinctly soft footfalls of a cat coming up for a cuddle or a nap, but nothing is there to be seen. This has happened at night as well as in the middle of the day.

I think that all animals have an intrinsic spark of the Divine that makes them unique individuals. Whether you choose to call that a "soul" is up to you...
And I have to say that after reading some of these answers, I'm amazed at the superiority complex some people/religions have about how man is "so much better" than any other living thing is just... mind-boggling and self-serving and arrogant and narcissistic.
Okay, rant done.

Generally, no. But sometimes it does happen. Dogs obviously have a life force energy, but this life force energy is of the same variety albeit more advanced than plants and is also similar but inferior to Man's life force energy before the spirit moves into the human body.
This comment is directed at some of the other answerers - There is proof of Souls/Spirits (same meaning in my context) existing and that is exactly what you are and you have a body.

Yes, I believe animals have souls.
If you had met my dog before he recently passed on, you too would have believed that he had a soul... he seemed almost human. Dogs have emotion. I think God put dogs on earth just to love.
If you've ever read the book "The Lovely Bones" there is an excellent version of what the author thinks heaven is like--- and there are a lot of dogs there.

I don't believe that anything has a 'soul', just personality.
However, having said that, if dog's DID have a soul, they would surely be more pure than a persons. Dogs love unconditionally, people do not.

I'm on tour now in a play in which the main character, my role, asks that very same question. Alas, it is no, a dog does not have a 'soul.' I love dogs, I get on very well with most dogs, and if a 'soul' existed, which it doesn't, I'd certainly wish one for all dogs.
