I have 2001 ford taurus se and 6-8 months ago my cylinder 1 burned through the spark plug wire now #2 cylinder has done the same. I did also notice that after replacing the wire my coil pack was not generating any spark for cylinder 2 from the coil pack side. Any ideas as to what could be causeing this? I am rreplacing the coil pack today I hope that fixes it but I am welcoming any other suggestions please.

Save your money on the coil pack, your car uses an ignition system called a waste spark system, in this setup the spark leaves the coil through 1 plug wire and comes back through another. Basically it fires one cylinder and wastes a spark on the other that it is paired to because that cylinder is on the exhaust stroke. With the firing order of your car the cylinders are paired 1-5, 2-6, 3-4, you burned up wires 1 & 2 that are on seperate coils inside the coil pack assemble I really doubt a coil will help you. Since your wires are burning off, replace the wires with a good set of replacements, not a cheap set, make sure they are properly routed away from the manifolds, and replace your plugs, worn plugs with excessive gap will cause the coil output to rise making a plug wire failure more likely. And on a personal recomendation, don't use Autolite spark plugs, we have a lot of problems with them, use anything else.

JT B had the right idea with the spark plug wire replacement but to get the best results use Ford motor company replacement wires from the dealer. My brother was also a ford dealer mechanic and said he never got a set of plug wires that were not ford made to stand up to the environment under the hood they would start to break down after a short period. They will be more expensive but they are worth it in the long run

Check for bad FUEL PRESSIRE RRGULATOR. After several years they can fail and leak extra fuel into the closest cylinders. Also check PCV valve for good vacuum and STOP using el cheap I pol changes. Do not trust Balvoline or PRESTONE coolant either. Your car will love AMSOIL or Mobil One 0W-30. Use AMSOIL POWER FOAM and Gumoit to clean throttle body on Both sides. On Ford card the IDLE air Control valve is removeable for cleaning. The IAC fine tunes the amount of air entering engine on stop and go and PREVENTS a leaned out mixture that can blow coils. GOOD LICK. The Taurus is way ahead of the game. Mostly made to Euro specs and carries many patents. ISE BOSCH or DENSI IRIDIUM PLUGS for best power and economy as well as to preserve the converter and O2sensors. Use FUEL EFFICIENT TIRES as well. bye now

If you aren only getting spark through one side of the coil then you would be right in changing the coil packs, also when changing the leads it is advisable to change them as a set not individualy.

Good Luck.

Did any oil get on the wires? That will tend to break them down and let the spark arc over to ground. Make sure the plugs have the correct gap. good luck.
