I have had this problem with a portable DVD player and the DVD Player in My laptop. This has happened with several DIFFERENT DVD's. I will watch about half of the movie, and then it will start skipping and won't stop. If I turn my computer off for awhile, and then put the DVD at the same spot where it had been skipping before, it does not skip, but may skip later in the DVD. Does anybody know what this may be?

i too have had this on portables
i have found that mine skips less if the battery is down to about 75% or lower and constantly skips if on the mains adapter.

i think mine id a one off though
it is more likely to be a dirty laser lens or a dirty disk or a scratched disk

blow compressed air into the drive with the tray open my scuba tanks at 232 bar really blast out the grime

hope this helps
all the best
Andy

ps it tends to be towards the middle / end because the data has to be read quicker - cds and dvds read from the center of the disk outwards so as the laser moves outwards, it has to cover a larger and larger are of disk for the given speed of rotation [ same way as a runner has the advantage if he is on the inside track? the runner on the outside has further to go]

If things are clean and the disc has no scratches, then maybe the players are getting hot, causing drift in the circuits, which will cause it not to read properly. This would tend to be the case if it is an older unit, or has been used a lot.

I have found that sometimes your DVD player is unbalanced - that's why it doesn't skip at the beginning but more towards the end. At least, that's what my wedding videographer told me when my wedding video DVDs started skipping towards the end.

You may want to buy a lens cleaner (made like a CD or DVD) for the DVD player....If the lens is dirty, it will skip....you can buy them at any major retailer (Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, etc.)...this has done wonders for my DVD player....Hope this helps!!!

I read in another thread that it is the laser switching to the next "layer". Apparently there are two or more layers of data on a disk and about halfway through a movie the data switches to the other layer and the laser has to also. It happens on all my discs on all my players. Always wondered why so I looked it up.

its more likely its the dvd. if it has blurry spots or scratches, you might not be able to see them just looking at them. try holdong it at an angle to the light. if you see any blurry spots or scratches, or even just a little dust, clean it with a multifiber cloth. if the scratches still stay, there are certain kinds of glasses cleaners that renove scratches. whatever you do, try not to just use a shirt to wipe it off, it causes even more scratches.

Mine used to do that..Both the PC and the unit hooked to my TV. I found three things that affect play back...Dirty cds, Dirty players or overheated systems. I also found the quality of the cd has an affect on play back too.
