The helmets are called CVC not the Kevlar helmets associated with ground troops. The CVC's protect against the bumps and grinds within the tank, but more importantly they are connected to an internal communications system. You can't really talk to one person with all of the noise from the vehicle as well as during firing.
Thats why they have helmets.

Several reasons. One: Protection. Everything in the tank is hardened steel with all kinds of pointy corners. When the tank is cooking along on uneven terrain it bounces around a lot. Two: Communication. The helmets contain headsets for listening and hearing protection. A 105mm or 155mm makes a lot of noise. Helmets also contain mikes for talking.

Have you ever been inside one? Have you ever watched on TV how they move along the terrain at top speed? They aren't built to give the passengers a smooth, comfortable ride- they're heavily armored combat vehicles, built for war. Cram 3 or 4 guys into one and go bouncing across the bumpy desert of Iraq or the hills & valleys of Europe or rocky beaches of Japan and see if you don't bump your head HARD a few times!

1. For protection.
2. For Communications. (The helmets have a microphone and speakers in the ear pieces so that you can talk to crewmembers and to other personnel monitoring radios.
