Two parents mentioned in my newspaper today wish to withold lifesaving treatment for their daughter in favour of waiting for a miracle.
The judge has ordered the treatment to go ahead though he says he respects the parents beliefs.
Would you put such faith in your god? Why not?
Do such beliefs deserve respect? Or harsh criticism?

gwhiz: Does this apply if the parents are abusive? As many would think this constitutes abuse (or neglect)

That story you all keep telling is stupid. Its basically saying that no matter who helps you, give god the credit. Its offensive to people who actually do help you.

I think the response from the judge was appropriate. We respect the religious basis but also respectfully oppose the parent's decision.

I think that the parents are not putting faith in God as much as they are testing God. God provided doctors and medicine yet they reject those gifts.

I agree that parents should be able to make all rational decisions regarding their child's care.

What you're describing does not constitute "rationality" or "care". What you're describing is crazy. Sometimes a judge has to step in - particularly when the parents are basically sacrificing their child so that they can feel that God loves them. These people ought to lose their child. I'm not saying that they don't feel a sense of love for their child. I'm not saying that they're acting maliciously. But consider this - in the future, they might get in a car accident. This same child might get thrown from the car. Laying there in a pool of blood, the parents can either pray or call 911.

You can't trust people like this to care for themselves, let alone an innocent. I wish there were a home for people like this, where the grownups could make sure they don't hurt themselves or others.

Hail Satan,

on one hand, they have an extraordinary amount of faith, which is probably something that deserves respect - putting all your trust in what you believe in. from that point of view, harsh criticism is probably unfair - they were doing what they thought right.

looking at it the other way, though, you know that story about the man who was on the roof of a house in a flood, where the water was steadily rising, and prayed to God to save him. A helicopter arrived, and the man said "no thanks, don't want help, God's gonna save me". another helicopter arrived, and then finally, a large boat - but the man refused them all. when he at last died when the water reached over the roof of the house, he got to the gates of heaven and said "why didn't you save me, God"?

and obviosuly, the two helicopters and boats were God's method of doing that.

now, i know that's a story, etc. but it strikes me as being a bit similar. perhaps the lifesaving treatment would have been a miracle in itself? it could have been the parent's God's way of saving their daughter, through the miracle they wanted. but like the drowning man, they wanted something supernatural.

so there is nothing wrong in putting your faith in your god, as long as you don't miss what is straight in front of you.

i think they reserve respect to a degree, but i think the judge was right to rule that the rtreatment should be given anyawy. they could have been waiting in vain for a "miracle" which was right in front of them.

There once was a man who claimed to have a strong faith in God. Then a flood came and he only survived by making it to the roof of his house. He prayed to God to save his life. After a day, some rescue workers came in a boat to pick him up. But, the man said, "NO!, I have faith that God will save me." So, the rescuers left. Then, a neighbor came by in a canoe. But again, the man refused help because he was waiting for a miracle. Then, a helicopter landed on his roof after about five days. But the man still chose to reject help and wait for a miracle. He died and went to heaven. But he was shocked that God had allowed him to die and so he asked the Lord a question. "Why did you let me die? I was believing in You for a miracle!" God answered him, "I sent you two boats and a helicopter. What were you thinking?"

God sends doctors and all sorts of people to help us. When we deny His help waiting for a miracle, it just shows that we are still blinded. Peace.

Edit: The above posting must have been written while I was writing mine. Ooops. :)

Their child isn't old enough to really know what she would want if she were an adult.
The judge is merely trying to give her a chance to live and decide all that for herself.
Its very easy as a child to acquiesce to her parents wishes, because she doesn't have the tools yet to disagree with any decisions they make on her behalf.

Harsh criticism. As a former jehovahs witness, I can vouch for the B.S. thinking that goes on in that regard. If you are an adult that wants to be retarded, that is one thing. To allow someone to do that to a child that can not make her own decisions that is entirely different. As far as i am concerned adults and parents that allow crap like that should be led right to the gallows.

Those parents are neglectful.

My gods and goddesses gave me enough good sense to use the best medicine available to me.

if man has the ability to save a child that is a miracle in itself to deny a child treatment is sin I feel.
