I think the best movie to test your sound system with is still "Saving Private Ryan." It has a lot of very low bass as well as highs. I think the sound track on it is the best I have heard. "The Matrix," "Gladiator," and "U-571" will also test your system well. I was quite impressed with the sound from the movie "Cars" recently although I think the default setting is 2.0 (it was on the copy I rented). You just have to be sure to select 5.1 in the DVD's menu.

Any action movie is good and everyone will have their own personal preference...
I always played the Dolby Digital / DTS / THX demo disc for people who wanted to hear a surround system when I used to work at a very high-end audio/video store.
You can buy these discs directly, or much cheaper for the same thing on Ebay. These "trailors" were designed to show off the features of Dolby Dig. / DTS so they are great to tune time alignment, EQ's, x-overs, etc...

V for Vendetta is a great movie to use to test out your system. Try the sequence in the beginning with V and Evie on the roof and the 1812 overture comes up.

Star Wars I-VI, It is the very reason Home Theaters have become so popular. Thomlinson Holman is the father of Home Theater. The imaging is superb and everyone I know knows the series inside and out so you will be able to experence something new on every system you put it on. have a marathon once you have broken in you cables and system after 30 hours of use.

The all around best movie to check your sound is "Gladiator" with Russell Crow. If your DVD player also plays in DTS, the movie has that option also as well as Dolby Digital.

the first movie I viewed with my surround sound was 'The
Green Mile' with Tom Hanks. It was great because when
it rained, you thought you were in the middle of the rain, and
any time someone was walking towards or away from you
it sounded like it was coming from behind you. It was great!! Another good one, was 'Conspiracy Theory', again with the
rain and such, but there's alot of great movies out there that
will give you the full benefit of your system, it's great!!!!!!!

If you are looking for the most "eye popping," most "colorful," "best run of the bulls soundtrack" DVD, it would be the Chinese foreign film: "The Promise." This film will leave you breathless.
Here are two movie shots from the film entitled "The Promise" projected onto a 92-inch diagonal screen/wall via a $ 320 refurbished Infocus SP4805 projector: http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/8a/f7/6866729fd7a0f1af104de010.L.jpg
