Unfortunately, recidivism is a serious issue. It appears from most studies that petty criminals meet more serious criminals during incarceration or worse realize that jail can be tolerable (so not really a threat). Recidivism is looked at in several articles. Let me suggest Googlescholar.com. You can find several types of petty criminal recidivism journal articles there.

Are you trying to make the connection that criminals only commit crime because they are sent to jail?

Very hard to give the exact figures but many criminals are recidivists because they tend to commit crimes again because it is a desease.

prison teaches criminals how to do new crimes and how to do them better. prison does not rehabilitate.
