we took our neighbours cat from a few houses away, because it had flea's, flea rash, it was thin, covered in scabs, starving etc. we took it to my aunt cause she used to be part of the cats protection league so they should be able to take it in to look after it.

so far it's been flea'ed etc so it doesn't have flea's anymore and it's coat is already looking healthier.

the question is, were we right to rescue this cat?

no we did not tell them we were taking him.

they say it's under a vet at the moment for a "heart murmer" but it's now been checked out by a vet, who could not believe how bad a condition it was in.

It had been locked outside, with no shelter, no food, no water...

apparently tho they treated their last cat the same, and it died, being underweight, covered in scabbs and fleas.

just a week being fed properly and looked after has brightened him up.

depending on how long the vet thinks the cat has left and the results of the blood tests.
If it's going to live indefinatley then my aunt will probably let the cats protection rehome it, or something, if he's "on his last legs" then my aunt would probably keep him.

he's alot happier and more alert too now.
I know we did it the wrong way, but I don't think anything would have improved if we'd spoken to them about it, they'd had the RSPCA out before too.

Those are not pet owners, those are people who happen to say they have a cat.

Any animal in bad shape should be removed from the conditions that put them there. If this means getting the cat to your Aunt, then so be it. An outdoor cat can reasonably be called a stray. They don't provide vet care for the animal and aren't feeding it, I'd say they don't 'own' it at all.

Give the cat the best chance at a normal life as you can.

Why it was very compassionate of you to rescue the cat you did it in the wrong manner. You could face criminal charges if the neighbor found out and wanted to press charges. You basically stole their cat. I know you took it for all the right reasons but there are laws that we as a society have to follow. You should have contacted the Humane Society in regards to the animal. You could have then let them know that you were willing to take the cat in and nurse it back to health. Hopefully the only thing that will come out of this is that the cat will once again be healthy and loved. Are you planning on finding it a new home or is your Aunt planning on keeping it? Either way don't let the neighbor find out. Good luck to you and the little fella. PS I would have done the same thing even though it is wrong.

Yes and no. People that have animals should take care of them, and this cat was being neglected, HOWEVER you took the cat without letting the people know you took it, or so it seems from your question (you don't mention you let them know you 'rescued' it.) So in essence you 'stole' it. I mean, you did the right thing, but did it the wrong way.
Are they looking for the cat? They could be worried sick about it. I would return it to the neighbors, or at least go and talk to them about this.

morally, yes. legally, i don't know. probably the legal thing to do if you had concerns was to report them for neglect of the cat to whichever animal charity you have where you live.
personally i would have done the same thing as you. i have a cat that i take care of, i don't give a **** who it belongs to, they don't look after it properly and i can't just stand back and see an animal suffering if i can do anything about it.

If nobody had done right by this animal so far, don't even think about it, you did the right thing, that animal was being badly treated and abused.

That was very thoughtful of you to do such a thing. However, I think it would've been better if you had gotten permission from your neighbour first.
