Cousins, without being "removed" are in the same generation as you. To count which type of cousin you are, you count how many generations you have to go back to find siblings (brothers and sisters). So all the children of your parents brothers and sisters are 1st cousins. All the grandchildren of your grandparents' brothers and sisters are 2nd cousins (except those who are your siblings or first cousins). All the great-grandchildren of your great-grandparents' brothers and sisters are 3rd cousins (except those who are your siblings or first/second cousins) etc.

The "removed" comes in when you're in different generations. So the children of your first cousins are your "first cousins once removed", and you are the same relationship to them. The grandchildren of your first cousins are your "first cousins twice removed", whereas the children of your second cousins are "second cousins once removed" and so on.

With respect Lula Belle and others are completely wrong.

To clarify:

Your first cousin is just a normal cousin, ie your parent's sibling's child.

Your second cousin is your parent's cousin's child.

Your third cousin is your grandparent's cousin's grandchild.

Your fourth cousin is your greatgrandparent's cousin's greatgrandchild.

And so on.

Unless the 'relationship' contains the word 'removed' they are of the same generation as you.

You second cousin one removed, for example, is your parent's cousin, or your cousin's child. They are in the 'line' of family of your second cousin, but 'removed' by one generation. There is no differentiation between both of these two relationships, as, if you think about it they are the same (ie your cousin's child would think of you as his/her parent's cousin).
