My mum and I are worried about our cat. He is five years old and he has been very healthy since he was a kitten and he had all the necessary jabs when we first got him, but for the last ten days, he hasn't been himself and he has two mouth ulcers and a lot of saliva around his mouth. He is just staying in a corner and isn't playing with his sister like he usually does. He still has an appetite though and is eating well when we mash his food up. He went to the vets last week and again earlier this week and she put him on antibiotics saying that he's got a virus which will clear up in its own time. We are very concerned that he might have something more serious though. Does this sound very worrying? What could it be and is ten days a long time for a cat to still be unwell? Should we get some blood tests done? Thanks for any advice.

First get cat insurance and then take him to the vets and get him checked out. Good luck.

Prolly His Teeth. Your Kitty Is Fine If It's Been At the Vet. When My Cat Of 4 Years Got A Virus It Took 1 Whole Month To Clear Up. It Doesn't Happen That Fast. But If You Don't See Any Changes In About 4 More Days Then Go Back To The Vet. The Changes Don't Have to Be Big. For Example it Can Be Like: Less Saliva Or Ulcers Are Smaller. Good Luck!=]]

You should get blood tests done for urea and creatinine levels, because mouth ulcers and infections sometimes are an indication of kidney problems. Keep your vet informed of his progress (or non-progress), and make sure to give him an antibiotic that is not dangerous for his kidneys. Check his liver function too (transaminases) at the blood test, and if it is fine, I would suggest Baytril. But don't listen to me really, because a. I am not a vet, b. I can't say what is wrong over the internet, youmust follow the vet's advice, but it is good to have the info I gave you in order to ask your vet about these. Perhaps get a second opinion from another vet too, since your cat is not getting well yet.

It sounds similar to something that my cat is currently suffering from. She had some rotting teeth and an absyss in her mouth (its possibly a tuma). We took her to the vet and they prescribed anti-biotics. It is clearing up but it does still cause obvious discomfort. The best thing you can do is take your cat to the vet again, and say that you are worried. Vets usually conceed that owners know their pets better than anyone and can tell that something is wrong. Keep giving it lots of attention. Check if it is cleaning its coat. If not, brush it once a week. Try liquidising the food to make it easier for it to eat. Hope it gets better soon...

If you feel there's something more serious than a virus after two visits to your vet - get a second opinion at another vet!

It sounds like there's something going on in his mouth - the virus maybe be secondary to something going on with the mouth. The reason I think that is because of the ulcers and the fact that he'll only eat after you soften the food.

Take him to another veterinarian and have them do a thorough oral exam.

My mums cat was like this and we were worried he wouldn't make it but he did. He was like this for about 2 weeks. Don't worry too much- if hes eating thats a great sign- the vet is probably right that its a virus, or it could be that he ate something which made him ill, like a rat which had been poisoned as that is what we think my mums cat had done. Hope this helps.

Thought anti bio tics did not touch a virus infection..Wouldn't get blood tests done yet, could it be even a bad tooth ?Although Vet would have picked that up surely..Probably somethings infected and will clear in time like Vet said but anti bio tics do not help Viral infections..

Listen to BonBon get insurance and then take him to a different vet! My cats had the same problem and one was off his food one wasn't. It turned out that they needed to have all teeth removed (apart from their fangs)! My poor little babies. Both Siamese so not sure if it's the breed. It cost 500quid for both of them (and i had no insurance). But they were so relieved afterwards and live normal lives, wet food and dried! and have lovely fresh breath! Get a second opinion for him, good luck, hope he is ok :)

Didn't the vet check his teeth. It could be that his teeth need cleaning, or even something as simple as blade of grass getting caught up in his mouth. Take him back to the vet.

the mum must be coated along with her kittens, extremely than being in an open mattress/field. attempt putting a towel over one end of her field so she feels greater shelter, so she will additionally see out slightly too. Cats like hidden, deepest places, so letting her sense secure ought to help. Or, provide her yet another mattress to decide for between...this one ought to scent of birthing and he or she would prefer a cleanser spot. Cats are very fussy approximately cleanliness. save the door of their room closed whilst the kittens are very youthful because of the fact they are very susceptible now and the mum needs your help.
