There are a couple of things that could be going on. You could have a touch of arthritis, alot of people don't know that they can have arthritis when they are young but it can develop at any age. If you have a touch of it, you may not even notice much, you may just be susceptible to an occasional flair up. Your GP can detect arthritis with X Rays usually. The other thing I am thinking of is your Sciatic Nerve. Alot of time if it is compromised in anyway the pain will show up in the hip. Problems with your sciatic nerve are a little more difficult to diagnose though, since this nerve runs from the middle of your back to your hips, down your thigh and knee, and across your shin into the big toe area of your foot, your need to watch for pain in any of those areas to help determine if you have any problem there. Also that pain is more of a stabbing or shocking pain.
Try to exercise your hip some, if it is not to painful. Never force exercise. If that isn't successful you should probably get an X Ray.

It could be a Bursitus of the hip (it has a proper name but I forget it). I have it. It's when the long muscle going from the top of your hip down the side of your leg rubs over an inflamed hip. If this is what you have it may have been brought on by some kind of injury that you never new you did, or something very minor. What I have been told to do is stretches to strengthen the hip muscles, but try to stay off it and not exercise too much. My exercises include standing up, putting the bad leg infront of the good leg, crossed over and lean to the good side to stretch the bad hip a bit, not enough so that it hurts though. and the same with the legs the other way around. Also to lie on my side with legs bent, bad hip on top, with your feet still touching, part your knees as far as you can before it hurts, do this for about 10 reps.
This however is only one opinion, it could be the start of arthritus or in fact a bit of a fracture. I'd check it out with your doctors first as the Bursitus thing can get really painful if the wrong thing is done.

Try stretching. Lay on your back, bring your knee up to your chest and hold it there for a count of 10. Then slowly with your opposite hand pull your knee in to your opposite side.
Be sure to stretch both sides of your hips because you will be imbalanced by stretching just one.
If stretching helps you then it may be muscle related. If the movement to stretch causes pain in your hip then don't do it.
The range of movement, or lack of movement will help your doctor determine whether your condition is muscular or skeletal.

This sounds like it could be related to arthritis. The only way to know for sure is to have this evaluated by your doctor to see what they think is going on.
