Economics. The requirements of Soldiers require Upper Body Strength and Stamina. Women when compared with Men on a GENERAL basis do much better, while some woman make EXCELLENT soldiers on average Men are better. Modern Warfare Tactics of Infantry have not changed enough that the AVERAGE woman could do the Job. It's still humping a Rifle, Gear and walking for hours on end.
But given the Variety of Non Infantry Tasks on the Modern Battlefield, Aircrew Gunners, Fighter Pilots, Tank Ops, Naval Ops, I Personally see NO valid reasons to exclude Woman from Combat Duty, given 1 Condition.
That Condition would be VOLUNTARY Sterilization or Long Term Contraceptive, Such as Norplant for any Female wishing to fill a Combat Role.
My Reasons for this are as follows.
In War any woman capture would UNDOUBTEDLY be raped, Oral Contraceptives would be taken from her.
Any Woman involved in Combat Operations is going to be exposed to Hazardous Materials that could lead to the loss of a child or to Birth Defects.
Finally a Combat Unit cannot afford to routinely lose a member for 12-24 months for Maternity Leave. This would require that another person be available to "fill in" for the pregnant member. Given the Current Levels in the US Military this would NOT be possible.
I have had the Honor of serving with some OUTSTANDING FEMALES!! I would not have had a problem having any of them Watching my Back when the S**T hit the Fan.

Men are GENERALLY more aggressive then women. You are trying to leave out the most important reason, which IS physical strength and endurance. Despite what everyone says about modern war, you ned that strength. And no amount of training will make a woman as strong as a man who is in roughly the same physical condition. That is WHY female Physical Fitness Tests are easier than male PFTs. The amount of pushups my wife has to do to get a max score on her test would almost FAIL one of her male soldiers. She is required to do 17 push ups to pass, and 46 to max the test. Her male soldiers in her age group need to do 40 push ups to pass and 75 to max the test. To get a perfect score on the 2 mile run, she has to run it in 15 minutes, 36 seconds, and she has until 19 minutes, 36 seconds before she fails. Males have to run the 2 miles in 13 minutes, and fail at 16 minutes, 36 seconds.

That phsical strength and endurance is just as important in modern combat as it was in the old days. In the infantry, you spend hours patrolling in 70-100 pounds of gear depending on your mission. If a 200 pound guy (now weighing 260 with all of his gear) suddenly gets hit, and his buddy has to haul him out of harms way, who would be more able to do that, the 165-185 pound male, or the 115-130 pound female? As for armor, just driving and shooting a man would probably be no better than a woman, however, when it comes to say, emergency field maintinance, say, repairing a track, it is a very hard, heavy job.

PLEASE don't think that this is an attack on women in the military. I hold them in very high regard, and many have fought very bravely. All I'm saying is that, when I was patrolling in Afghanistan/Iraq, if I needed to be dragged to cover, or needed a door kicked down or something similar, I would have rather had one of my 5'10"-6'5", 175-220 pound buddies at my side than say my 5'3", 120 pound wife.

EDIT- I know this has gotten long, but one other point. If a woman gets pregnant, she is not deployable from the day of a confirmed pregnancy until several months after the birth of the child. During that time, she is still assigned to the unit, and you can't replace her. That means that the remaining members of her squad or section have to pick up the slack. Pregnancy has been used by female soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines to get out of deployments before, far more often than a guy will break a leg or an arm.

To help increase the population. You have 50 woman and one man, you can have 50 babies that year. If you have 50 men and one woman, you are more likely to have only one baby that year. The females are needed to help replenish the troops. THere have been historical reference that females can make good warriors. The Amazons were based on matriarchal society before and maybe during the greek periods. Females fought side by side with men, but the greeks distorted the image over time . The Brits have Bodicea and there are some instances in THe Russia and Mongolia that Females fought, but at lesser capacity.

Well the difference isn't strength......it is force. Men are usually larger than women on average and can support more muscle on average which is used for force although we call it strength. Strength is as much mental as physical. For the second part, I would always say men would be better SUITED for combat but I am not sure that means they would be better soldiers. Personally, I always think smarts will end up winning over size, strength, force etc. regardless of gender.

Men is the symbol of soldiery although women are now accepted in the military. However, the profession of soldiery is for men.
