make it from milk... but it must be a cold place... get some yoghurt, milk and some salt... let it sit for a few days..

All you need to do is add a few drops of lemon to regular cooking cream. I am Italian and sour cream is not sold anywhere in this country. So, when I need sour cream for an American recipe, this is what I do.

Yes, you can make it at home as well. You can also get a package of starter to make sour cream from a company called Yogourmet (this company also has packages for making your own yogurt, and buttermilk). You can find out more by going to: http://www.yogourmet.com

simple...you take 1/2 gallon heavy whipping cream, add 1 cup cultured buttermilk, put it in a non-reactive vessel like glass or stainless steel, and let it sit, covered with a clean kitchen towel in a warm spot for a day or so.
refrigerate until cold, and you have creme fraiche, the original version of sour cream.

You can sour it by adding vinegar or lemon juice to cream. Or you can substitute it for plain yoghurt.

when i make sour cream, i use cottage cheese and butter milk, blend together, and let sit for about 3 days.

you must of course get enough cream so when it settles you have enough to hold yourself.It has to almost rotten to be sour cream.let it ferment just like homemade beer,and you will have sour cream
