If stopped at a sobriety checkpoint and asked, "Have you had anything to drink tonight?" and I answer, "yes" even though I have not consumed any alcohol....as I drink water, iced tea and soda. I've told the truth; and usually when the officer asks, they don't specify alcohol. It may be implied, but if they aren't specific...if I say, "no" I'm guilty of lying to the officer, and if I say "yes" I could be guilty of interfering with the officer doing their job (wasting their time). There's just no winning this one...for me.

..and yes, I love stirring the pot....here, out there, I know my place, and I don't mess with those that are so far above the 'common man'

You're welcome for the points...and I can afford them. Interesting to see the people that choose to get riled...shows that not every officer has a sense of humor as the one Joan79 described.

The police officer question is direct so you should use your common sense when being confronted by an officer of the law, it would be unwise on your part if you think that he is asking if you drink coffee or tea, which in my own opinion is not the question he have in mind. Even a stranger that would ask you the same question, it is still the same configurative imagination, that he is asking if you drink any beer or liquor.
You should be firm not joking on every reply when being ask especially on the streets of an officer of anything. Remember these officer are not in the mood for jokes, they are doing their job with a minimum tolerance to go with it. They are some times TIRED, pissed off, all they wanted is to go home and relax together with their own families, because they are also humans just like you and me. Nope I am not a cop.

The only time wasted would be yours if your answer led to a longer investigation or detention. Answering the main question would required lumping all officers together and believing they all think the same. Since they don't, that question can't really be answered.
Look up the statistics and try to understand why checkpoints are conducted. When you understand the magnitude of the devastation caused by drunk drivers, you may appreciate better what is trying to be accomplished.
There is nothing wrong with "stirring things up" in life, but there is something to be said about developing some hypothetical question which may direct attention to you during a checkpoint and away from those who really need the service (the drunks).
I wouldn't get mad if you answered that way... my next question would be, "what did you drink?"

My husband and I once got stopped. The officer asked: 'anything to drink'? which made my husband say 'no thanks'. The officer had the laugh of the evening. There's nothing wrong with a little joke like that, but I think you should be careful in saying yes when you obviously know what's implied. With a glimpse in your eyes you can say: Yes sir - I've been drinking - but only non-alcoholic drinks.

It looks such as you have a different way of observing issues. You tend to think of with regards to the consequence it has on persons, and not the consequence it has on you. You sound indifferent all around. rather detatched, i do no longer think of its general to sense so impassive, yet i think of there ought to be a clarification for it. something faster or later could have happend that all of us started you preparation your self to no longer sense something. or perhaps i'm incorrect, and not something took place. Its merely who you're, and how your innovations thinks is merely different. greater cases I learn people who're over emtional, dramatic, and searching for interest and reassurance. Your on the oposite element of issues, in case you imagined a chart a million-10 and a million being the main emotional 10 being the least, healty minded persons could fall someplace between spectacular. it may no longer be a foul theory to speak to a therapist or a psycholosist approximately this.

Now this is funny you sound like you want trouble well if you do ask them the same questions they ask you don't be too much of a bother though they might just do something you wouldn't think possible....some police are quite sneaky and if you shame them they will try and get you back somehow so be careful in being sarcastic...haha too funny

You know what the officer is asking when he/she asks if you have had 'anything to drink'. If you wanna be difficult about taking it so literally, you could answer 'only water' or 'been drinking Pepsi all evening'. I get those sorts of answers all the time and it doesn't make me mad.

Why not then answer "Nothing alcoholic"? It is not misleading, not a lie and solves the problem with regards to how the question is interpreted.
Unless of course, you just enjoy stirring the pot?

Dude, don't be a dogmatic jerk.
You know what they officer MEANS. Go to the dictionary and look up the word CONNOTATIVE.
The fact that you waste your time (and points) on stuff like this amazes me. I just took the time to answer to tell you that you may eventually be OCD. At least I EARN points for this entry.

Not a problem with answering honestly. The next question from the officer WILL BE what and how much. This is when you continue answering honestly.
