We have a 6 week old great dane puppy and we are feeding him Eagle Pack Holistic Select Large Breed puppy formula. It has lower protien so we thought that would be better for him. We were originally gonna go with Canidae all life stages but changed our mind at the last minute. He seems to not care for the stuff at all though. He was being fed the good cheap stuff before we got him. I was wondering if anybody who uses Canidae could tell me if it seems like a tasty dog food cuz this eagle pack stuff looks all dry and tastless. Thx

Hi - I raise German Shepherds, and my dogs need high protein. They eat Canidae All Life, but I switch out foods, so they eat the Canidae for a few bags, then Timberwolf Organics, then Innova Red Meat, then Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, they seem to enjoy the Canidae the least, but it never goes uneaten. I do notice the females tend to be more picky and when I'm mixing the Canidae with the Timberwolf they will try to pick out the Timberwolf to eat. You may want to leave your great dane on Canidae for the first few months though and then switch to one of the others. Six weeks is still kind of young and their taste buds are still developing.

I have feed Canidae for quite some time to my Golden's including my pup and I have had no problems at all. I feed the Lamb and Rice formula and my dogs are just beautiful! Large breed dogs do not require more protein than small breeds in fact it is quite the opposite! Large breed dogs need a lower protein than small breeds to be able to grow more slowly and have their bones and joint set properly! I never recommended to any of my clients a percentage rate over 24% for what ever food they were to feed their Golden pups! To feed a large breed dog or even a Giant breed any food over that would promote to rapid a growth and joint and bone issue fairly early on. Canidae has had no recalls at all! Ever! ADD: I do not feed canned foods to my dogs! I never had and never will. I have contacted Canidae several times about all these issues posted they have always gotten back to me! I too live on the East Coast! I still have never had any issues with the Canidae and Unless positive proof is show to me I will continue to do so. My golden pup now 7 months old is not only doing excellent on this food but Is developing at a normal rate and is as healthy as a horse! Even my vet is very impressed with all my Golden's here! So much so that she now recomends Canidae to her clients!

Eagle Pack Natural is an excellent food for a dane pup (mine is on it now and it reversed his joint growth problems - he eats it like there's no tomorrow). You should add a little bit of tepid water to the food right before you put it down for him. For some extra oomph, you can put a tablespoon or two of the Eagle Pack wet food on top.
I tried him on Canidae and neither one of us liked it. He didn't like the taste, and I didn't like the high calories.
Try your guy on the Eagle Pack Natural instead of the Holistic Select. He doesn't need a puppy food at all. He'll grow too fast. You should also give him some vitamin C and Probiotics to keep him healthy.

Canidae All Life Stages is a very good food choice for Dane puppies..many Dane owners/breeders including myself use this for all of our Danes pups included.
Most Danes like the food and eat it very readily.
Do NOT feed a Dane puppy puppy food of ANY kind..the protein level is too high..Protein levels should never be higher then 24%.
Also Danes are NOT more prone to hip dysplasia then any other breed of dog.

I raise a breed that is the size of a female Great Dane.
They do wonderfully on Canidae. It is the best for my breed that I have found.
My friend was visiting with 2 Chihuahuas. She said they wouldn't eat any kind of dog food, as they were spoiled to people food..I bet her that they would eat Canidae, and I won..lol
They were here for 2 months, and ate it every day, put on weight, a shiny coat, and didn't look like such old dogs anymore (12 years old)
You will love this site : http://www.greatdanelady.com/
She is a canine nutritionist and her GD's are very long lived.
I think she told me she has a 14 year old!

Feed your puppy Merrick puppy plate. Eagle Pack as corn as a second ingredient, which is bad. Corn causes skin and coat problem and also allergies. My dog is on Merrick and he LOVES it. He is 2 years old, but I have a 5 pound bag of puppy plate dry food on stand by for a treat once a week. All the flavors are awesome and he loves the canned food as well. Since he has been eating Merrick (little over a week) his recent allergy/rash in his stomach that he had for over 2 years from eating food with corn in it has completely vanished!!! His coat and skin also look a lot more healthy!! I don't know if you know this, but Great Dane's are one of the most prone to hip dysplaysia of all dogs. DO NOT run or jog your puppy what so ever. Some people say you can after they turn one, but still do not. I have had Great Danes and known people who had them. My first Dane was 12 weeks when I got him, I waited till he was 14 months to jog with him. By 2 years of age he had hip dysplasia and the list goes on. So, just a lot of slow walking for your puppy!!! Good luck!!

Hi. We have a german shepherd and before we ever got her we have definitely done a lot of research trying to find out which dog food to feed to our gsd. So after doing all of the research we finally came up with Canidae. In my opinion Canidae is one of the best and healthiest brand name dog foods out there. We even went to the nearest pet store which carries Canidae and other brands like eagle pack.
The owner of the pet store totally agreed with the fact that we should feed Canidae to our dogs and the owner of the pet store feeds Canidae to her dogs as well. Canidae was voted one of the top 25 best dogs foods. So I have to go with Canidae.
Good Luck !!!!!

I have not personally used Canidae, but Timberwolf Organics, http://timberwolforganics.com/pet-foods makes some foods that are lower protein, like the Black forest.
They use a lot of herbs and stuff that are nutritionally beneficial, and safe for dogs, but actually make the food taste good. It actually smells flavorful rather than bland. The southwest chicken smells spicy and yummy, and my dogs love it. All their foods are rated 5-6 stars out of 6 on the dog food analyisis website. http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
