I think that no one will ever break the Petty record.. That is the one sports record that can't be broken. Petty was great in his time. Gordon is, in my opinion better than Earnhardt. Half of Earnhardt's wins came as a result of his knocking someone out of his way. He could do that and keep his car under control which few drivers can do. So I rank them Petty, Gordon, and Earnhardt in the order of the 3, but I think that Earnhardt would be 5 in my book because I'd put David Pearson and Bobby Allison ahead of Earnhardt.

On a level playing field like there is today, Jeff Gordon would win a points race in that 3 driver group.
If you included Tony Stewart I'd have to pick him. He's won 2 champions since Gordons last one.

Each of these drivers are from different eras.
Yes they all crossed each others times and they are all worthy of the title.
But Petty in the "old" era was the best.
Earnhard in the "transition" era(from old to new) was the top.
And Jeff Gordon is best in the "post transition era".

There is no compairson. Peetys wins came when they raced 4 nights aweek or more. Dale Earnhardt was one of a kind. Gordon is a crybaby-do not forget how he left his bush team.
With the rules today if all 3 were the same age I would take #3.

petty was back in the day 200 wins tha's a freakn lot and they were competative back then too. after petty, there's earnhardt and he was the sh**! After he died, gordon's turn came, and let's face it, he might get real close to petty, you never know!
