Despite the stereotype of being pushy and rude, I have found the majority of New Yorkers to be kind and helpful. (I assume you're asking about Manhattan)
On a recent trip, I was in line at Rite Aid and asked the cashier if she knew of a Thai restaurant near. The gentleman behind apologized for 'overhearing' and not only gave a great recommendation, but walked me and my friend there!
You will find that no matter where you go in the 5 Burroughs, the people who live there are proud of their neighborhoods and more than happy to point out its high points!

I think they get a bad rap because of the quick pace the city moves at, however after moving there and thinking the negative thoughts about people being rude etc. I was sweetly surprised that the advice I had been given was completely false. Most of the population is very friendly, of course like anywhere you will find your rude and nasty people. In my opinion because the pace in which New Yorkers live is very fast, I actually think that is mistaken for rudeness when it is usually not the case. It is just a very busy city. In a city as busy as New York, if you aren't just as quick as everyone else, you will get run over.
Go Visit, you will enjoy it completely!
So Diverse!

I think its like any other big city..theres good and bad, and rudeness often comes from being in a hurry, not from being a jerk.
I found people in NY to be very nice.. I whipped my map out and a woman came right up to me to help...glad she did, becuz my dumb hotel was hard to find, it had no signs saying what it was..duh lol. And soon, 2 other people also helped, it was nice.
Soon as you get the map out they know you probably need help..
LOTS of tourists in manhattan, I think it was half tourists/half natives.
Ya cant judge 8 or 9 million people, becuz you can never KNOW 8 or 9 million people..

I am a New Yorker and I can say that it's well rounded in attitude. If you are polite, most people will be polite back. I love NY and always look forward to going there.

ny is bigg
which makes the personalities of people there bigg
you can't exactly use one judgement to judge a WHOLE city
so it's like all other places, variuos personalities
we are nice i guess, but a lot of us are busy and when we can't get to where we want to go on time because people are blocking us, then we aren't so nice....

Here it is: In general, NYers are nice and polite and generally helpful to tourists, when they ask for directions and when tourists ask for a NYer for advice about tourist sights. But you will find some NYers that are rude; don't let them discourage you. Enjoy this great city of mine.

You'll find every kind of person you can think of in NYC. Some are very direct, rude, nice, funny, depressed, neurotic, pissed, pleasant, even polite.
