Tithing first. Luckily the Church has ways to help members out with other bills. Along with tithing we as members can give more if we choose to other Church programs. We can give money towards the printing of copies of the Book of Mormon, or to help out with welfare needs, or food storage needs. These things are open to all... members and nonmembers. When hurricane katrina hit some of the first people on site to help was the Church and the local food storage area was opened to help all those in need. You didn't see that on the news.
So I would pay tithing because " will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them." (1Nephi 3:7)

Easy. Go talk with my bishop and tell him my situation. If he counsels that I should pay my house payment, then I'd do it. But I can't think of any time when he would actually tell me to not pay my tithing. So he might offer to help out with the house payment if I can't do both!

See, being a full tithe payer, attending the temple, being active in church, fulfilling our callings, and basically doing what we're supposed to be doing, will bring us blessings. That should not be too hard to realize. If we're doing these things, and we ask, we will receive. So it is not a matter of paying for one or the other. It should never be a question of that. We do what we can to obey the commandments, be active and faithful in all other ways, and ask for help when we need it.

These blessings and promises are available to anybody that will enter into the covenants of the Lord. This is the security of the righteous.

Now if we are living beyond our means, we may be counselled to make the playing field reasonable for ourselves and those around us, so we do not become burdens. The church will not help those who are not in true need of help.
That's why we have bishops and other local leaders/servants of the Lord appointed to counsel and serve us.

I was in that position a few years ago.. I paid my tithing.. and the next day I got the same amount of money I had given as tithe in tips at work.. and was able to pay my mortgage. Then I got an even better paying job.. and now I'm not in that position anymore.

Tithing, always first.
Everything works out... what a wonderful blessing!! I have actually been in that situation a few times and have always been blessed by my decision to pay my tithing.

tithing

10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

I have been in that position before and God has never let me down.

in fact my friend lost his job and they have paid tithing all their lives.

Well the church was able to give them a months worth of food, pay their phone bill and helped him with job search -- so the church is there for us when we need them too.

Tithing. I've been in situations like this and the Lord always provides. And why is this strictly a question for Mormons? Tithing is a principle taught in the bible. All Christian religions believe in tithing.
