MGI Bill pays for your college right, but you gotta contribute some money out of your paycheck, isnt DANTES free education though?

DANTES is the military free testing system, similar to CLEP tests, that allow you to get college credit free simply by testing for it. The GI bill merely allows you to use money to pay for college.

there really isn't a comparison.

Yes, DANTES tests are free to military personnel. Its like taking the final exam for whatever college class you want the credits for. Pass the test and you get the credits. The GI Bill is money ($1200) taken from your paycheck over the course of a year, that right now turns into $38000 for you to use on college. Its also good for up to 10 years after you get out of the service. The good news is as Congress increases the amount of the GI bill, your end amount also goes up while your in the military.

I agree with the previous answer.

Some locales charge for DANTES testing, but the price is usually under $100 per test (WAY cheaper than paying for a college course). A lot of locales overseas offer the tests free of charge. If you fail a test, the waiting period is still the same though.

The G.I. Bill money comes out of your paycheck, but it's only $1200, or $100 for 12 months. On the back side, you get upwards of $40K for education. I am not sure of the total amount due to the fact that it increases every year.

You can use G.I. Bill while on active duty to pick up the slack that Tuition Assistance (covers about 75-80% of tuition cost) doesn't cover. After leaving active duty, you have 10 years in which to use your G.I. Bill funds. Look up G.I. Bill

DANTES = Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support

DANTES exams are the military equivalent to the CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) tests, in that they are tests you can use to get college-level credits after home/self-study.

I used a couple of the DANTES and CLEP exams to get undergraduate college level credits in preparation for working on a Master's Degree in a Business Administration, for which I did not have undergraduate course prerequisites, despite already having a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. They saved me several months of undergraduate coursework, a couple thousand dollars, and way too much travel time from Ft. Huachuca to Tucson AZ three nights a week to get the prerequisite classes. I was then able to complete an MBA in just over a year.

The Montgomery GI Bill was a program designed to help Veterans pay for advanced education. The GI Bill ended up reimbursing me for all my MBA tuition, and it is tax-free!

DANTES and CLEP will get you undergraduate-level credits. The GI Bill can be used to fund ANY level of advanced education.
