Each count is a separate criminal charge, representing a separate criminal action.

So, for example, say you killed two people. You could be charged with "Count 1. Murder of ABC; Count 2. Murder of XYZ"

Or on your example, "Count 1. Carrying a Firearm. One May 10th, the defendant did carry.....; Count 2. Carrying a Firearm,. On May 14th, the defendant did carry...."

Two different charges, they just happen to be the same statute violated twice. Whether twice at the same time (but different targets) or twice at different times.

"Counts" simply refers tohow many times you are being chraged with that particular crime.

For example: You drive your car through a crowd and kill 7 people, and injure 25 more. You would be charged with 7 counts of vehicular homicide, and 25 counts of either attempted vehicular homicide or AWDW.
