.....plus think that they are bilingual for knowing a couple of chat short cuts?

Yes, we hide it because it is off putting to others and many of us were bullied consistently for it growing up in schools where mediocrity is supported. Also once intelligent people mature they usually lighten up, many of us were rather "uptight" as kids and as we get older we are no longer afraid. Basically more introverted than into people. Online the difference goes away, as one is not actually talking.
As far as language goes, I do understand some Spanish from knowing French but it is interesting to see the bigoted things people say about you if they think you do not understand.

Really intelligent people tend not to say as much as they know that 90% of the other people wouldn't understand them anyway. Being bilingual is not a criteria for being really intelligent. If you are truly well spoken in any language, you'll get the point across. Some people know a litlle about many languages yet can't really speak at all.

The ones who really are intelligent are smart enough to know that people would be uncomfortable knowing that they were well above average. They do not bother to hide it in situations where they believe that demonstrating their intelligence is not insulting to the people around them.

If they really are this smart, then they will be fully aware that learning chat shortcuts is not bilingualism unless they are promoting the idea that there is a new written language.

It is possible to learn a few words of a foreign language, include them in every day speech & then claim that the words aren't part of a foreign language since they are used in everday speech.

Perhaps you have only learned a few phrases of the other language and are using your lack of knowledge to deny it's existence :D

One of the tests of intelligence is to see if you cannot see what appears to be obvious to those who get high scores :P

God Bless

Intelligent people live in a real world. Being a genius and actually applying that to the real world are two completely different things. I work with a lot of incredibly intelligent people, and most of them lack the common sense necessary to deal with issues that arise. They also get extremely frustrated when someone doesn't understand them, usually compounding the problem.

The second half of this question contradicts the first -- since you're talking about the REALLY intelligent, I assume they'd be smart enough to know the real definition of bilingual.

That said, truly intelligent people tend to be quiet more of the time, because they realize they learn more by listening than by hearing themselves repeat the same things over and over. Because of that, some people--especially the loud ones--don't immediately recognize their intelligence.

Because their not trying to prove anybody their intelligence. It's like a modest person saying their modest. You know if someone is modest they will NEVER say it.

Same as intelligent people, i think those that want to put people down are the ones that try to prove their intelligence. When your good at something, their is no need to prove it. We all are good at something, but those that try to prove it, are those that havent found what their good at.

inzaratha: <-- Thank you very much you actually answered his question, by saying "We hide it" your considering or complementing yourself as an intelligent person. Not that their is a problem, but once you say you speak two languages, your just proving his point right. Therefore, your not as intelligent as you think you are my friend.

Most really intelligent people hide their brilliance because it bothers others. So, they play (relatively) dumb and try not to scare the neighbors.
