My daughter is 12, and in modeling/acting classes. It looks like she's inherited my husband's skin (acne), and we are trying to find an effective way to stop the acne before it gets to the point where a little concealer won't cover it.

I've bought Neutrogena and Clearasil facial cleansers, but they dry her skin terribly - even when followed by an oil-free moisturizer. I've heard about the toothpaste remedy, but I'm afraid it will create dry, flaky patches on her delicate skin. She's very fair-skinned and everything seems to be more noticeable on her than other people.

Is there an OTC treatment besides toothpaste and facial cleansers that you have found effective? Should I just take her to a dermatologist?

I've heard mixed reviews on Proactiv, and can't afford to buy it then find out it's ineffective or has a negative effect.

I think we'll try the toothpaste; it's something we already have, and it only goes on small areas - so I know it can't cause her to break out.

Thanks for all the responses!

I don't recommend toothpaste... I also don't recommend steaming the face or getting into a long routine at such a young age. I think you should look for a quality skincare line such as DHC ( http://www.dhccare.com ) that is natural and great for sensitive skin. Get products based on her skin type. Keeping it simple is the best way to go, IMO.

DO NOT use a product that list achool on the ingredients. No toothpaste either same affect it will dry skin to much.
I have recently bought a product called beyond belief aha from sally's beauty supply. Gentle cleanser no achool, exfoliater (very fine grit), mattifying toner in case you get shiny in the t-zone, a clay mask that works get on blackheads, moisturizer, repairing serum, and a salyic acid for on the spot treatment. All together it cost about $35 dollars. I have tried proactive before but I wasn't impressed after about three months, my skin started breaking out more.

Quick facial treatment twice per week will due wonders in about two weeks you will see a huge difference.

1) Cleanse face
2) exfoliate, circular motion not to hard
3) steam, boil water poor into bowl, hold face over bowl with towel covering head so steam does not get out about ten minutes. This opens pores so mask can get all dirt out.
4) tone
5) Clay mask for acne, peeling mask for dry skin
6) tone again
7) Repair serum (if you have)
8) Spot treatment
9) Moisturize
Takes about 30 minutes twice per week but it works wonders!

On non facial days ...
Cleanse, tone, repair serum, spot treatment, and MOISTURIZE!!!

I have used this for two months and have not had a break out since the first week of use. Good luck to you.

I used proactiv for about 10 years and it worked well. However, I have recently started using the Dermalogica line which has made a huge difference in my skin. I've used the Anti Bac Wash, Multi Active Toner, Oil Control Lotion and Anti Bac Masque. Dermalogica has Salicylic Acid and Triclosan which inhibits bacteria growth. I have pretty sensitive skin and so far have had no problems. My skin looks the best it has in years.

I tried Proactiv and it did nothing for me, but everyone is different. In the end I went to a dermo and I'm on Roaccutane now, it's incredibly affective and cures acne for life, but only reccomended for people with bad skin.

what about an acne remover for sensitive skin? or proactive?

EDIT:i forgot to mention, toothpaste dries up the zits and only causes flakes if you get it on her clear skin, so you just dab a tiny bit on the zits.

hope this helps! :D
